I though it was just because it was my nearby hub for so many years. Although I dislike Houston airports even more. I believe DFW is the one where I got to walk on the tarmac one Labor Day weekend when it was 106 degrees out.

okay we never have to hand it to this man - he still sucks, even though currently he is doing some very correct things - but I am not too proud to admit that calling himself βGavin Christopher Newsomβ did really make me laugh

This kind of response will do more than most constitutional litigation to make this stuff less harmful and indeed less likely to happen at all

I like that Gov. Casar thing. If we could reverse climate change too I'd get an apartment there. Well, and also ... and then ... okay, definitely overthinking.

10 cops from MPD, US Marshals, and an unidentified agency likely to be DHS/ICE are standing on a residential street at night. 3 marshals (2 white women, 1 white man) are in the foreground/bottom right of the photo, standing and watching from my side of the street. Across the street, 3 MPD are standing on the sidewalk facing the house/with their backs to me. 4 federal agents are visible on the porch talking to someone who is inside the house, where the front door is open. The background of the other houses is blurred to preserve anonymity and safety.
Last night, I got home a few mins before 9pm. By the time I was outside to walk the dog at 9:05, there were a dozen federal agents and local cops on the stairs and lawn of the house directly across the street from me.
This is what the federal enforcement looks like in DC right now:

oh yeah, I failed to mention that any airport affected by a city/state with anti-trans bathroom laws really SUCKS and I am talking about you, SLC, because you're a hub and unavoidable in this part of the country and FYYFF. (I'm happy to sacrifice soda choices for an airport where everyone can pee.)

about two years ago, visiting MD/DC/DE to see if we wanted to live anywhere around there. (Obvs the answer turned out to be no, but it was a fun trip.) We thought Philly would be the most convenient airport for us and it was except for the soda deficit.

On the other hand, the Philadelphia airport has no Dr Pepper anywhere onsite and WTF, Philly, how can you do this to us.

New Orleans (MSY) has such a bizarrely inconvenient car rental location (it makes no SENSE, you travel almost in a loop) that you wonder if it's even worth renting a car. Pro tip: unless you need to drive to suburbs etc., it's not. Also, the redesigned airport layout (outside and in) is dreadful.

one lesson of the last nine months is that any institution is only as brave as the least courageous member. true of the u.s. senate and the texas senate, true of elite academic institutions, true of giant media companies. resistance is much harder, maybe literally pointless, if your peers capitulate

Thread. We have to defend the acts of thinking about and analyzing things in the face of an onslaught against them. They want us dumb and scared and everything is moving towards that goal at the moment

Our whole timeline has been nothing but journalists, critics and culture writers announcing their own layoffs and I'm literally sickened by the thought of what will happen to society when all of their work will be taken over by Clippy

Nobody wants to talk about it but my whole life has been a corporate psyop shifting the burden of saving our burning planet onto me, the consumer trapped in consumerism, when the reality is that my lifetime of recycling is negated by one private flight by Elon Musk, Bernie Sanders, or Taylor Swift.

there are much worse problems.
that said, as someone who loves writing reviews & has written thousands & is proud of that & thinks reviews are important, seeing culture coverage, critics & reviews constantly take it on the chin for the past decade--esp last few years--has been really fucking hard.

I checked Ebert's IGBY GOES DOWN review bc that was the movie where *I* thought (and wrote) that; it's a good movie but there's a clip from HOLIDAY (1938) early in it that's distractingly terrific. But no, it didn't bother him then. Would love to learn if/when he (or someone well-known) said it.

I've heard Ebert referred to as a national treasure. That is wrong. He was an international treasure. A global treasure.

Well, I believe the point is for civil servants to be made temporarily employed tempsβ¦Iike the private sector. They donβt want federal employees to expect stability. I donβt believe this is about functioning. Itβs about disciplining labor. They donβt care if they break the government.

we went to a fancy 23rd street clothes boutique (Spero Park) on Saturday so my wife could try on dresses and skirts and I was delighted to see some labels from the old-school Modcloth days, like Emily & Fin (now discontinued, they said!) ... made me miss old Modcloth. It does feel like chaos now.
