TFW an author has done just enough research to get things spectacularly wrong.
12.04.2025 15:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Either yesterday or this morning. Who can remember that far back these days?
08.04.2025 01:31 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One of these is a real textbook and the other is a gag gift that came hollowed out with a flask of whisky in it.
04.02.2025 16:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I have such a hard time getting rid of old textbooks. They cost me a fortune. An who knows when you'll need to look up something on the empirical stability rules for atomic nuclei, reflectometer theory or stellerator equilibria :-/
04.02.2025 16:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thanks for this, it's really great!
One apparent typo: the "key findings" in section 9.2 appear to have gone missing.
It feels like 2000 was a dividing line. Maybe a lot of people were disappointed about the lack of hoverboards and flying cars and started looking back?
02.02.2025 18:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0As someone who came of age in the 80s, I don't recall much nostalgia for the 70s (bellbottoms, disco!) or the 60s (war, weird!)
01.02.2025 17:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Same data again, but in a new Elastic projection I've been experimenting with that avoids disintegrating Australia.
08.01.2025 17:38 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 2Fans of koalas, poisonous snakes, the Divynils or other Antipodean stereotypes will be pleased to hear I'm working on a projection that is similar, but doesn't disintegrate Australia.
07.01.2025 20:11 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0@paulwoods.io I put together some code at github.com/GlobalFishin... that should be fairly self contained.
07.01.2025 15:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1You always have to sacrifice something when you make a world map. In this case, it's Australia.
03.01.2025 20:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It got ripped in half and smeared along the edge. You can see that better in this map where they show the land: kunimune.blog/wp-content/u...
03.01.2025 20:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It turns out that the Spilhaus projection exaggerates the size of the Chinese coastline quite a bit. There is a similar projectioin, called Elastic-2, which is better in this regard. See: bsky.app/profile/tim....
03.01.2025 19:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Same data, but now plotted in the Elastic-2 projection described at kunimune.blog/2023/12/29/i.... This reportedly has less area inflation around the East China Sea, and we do see that the vessel traffic in Asia appears less dramatic.
03.01.2025 17:41 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 3I need to do a little clean up on the repo I'm using before I open it upβI'll try to do that in the next few daysβbut in the meantime, I used the projection code from github.com/rtlemos/spil... to do most of the work. My main contribution was convincing Matplotlib to do backgrounds in a way I liked.
03.01.2025 14:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0@paulwoods.io @davidkroodsma.bsky.social I played around with this over break and managed to map vessel presence in the Spilhaus projection. It really shows how little vessel traffic the southern oceans have.
It's also a good candidate for a black light poster with this color scheme.
I just completed all 25 days of Advent of Code 2024! #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com
Ugh! Day 24 was kind of brutal, but finally saw the trick of it.
I've completed "LAN Party" - Day 23 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/23
I was handicapped by a complete failure to follow instructions, but eventuallyβafter taking a break to shovel a few tons of gravelβsaw the light.
I've completed "Race Condition" - Day 20 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/20
This one was fun and had a closer to uniform difficulty between the parts. My solution was more general than it needed to be, but still ended up running decently fast.
I've completed "Warehouse Woes" - Day 15 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/15
Today was nice and straightforward, softening us up for some gruesome puzzle tomorrow I imagine.
I just got $10 in the Equifax settlementβοΈ As paltry as that sum is, I suspect that this may be the high point of data breach settlements and it's all downhill from here.
15.12.2024 02:54 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Are you good at cursing? The borrow checker requires a constant stream of profanity to make it work.
14.12.2024 23:50 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I've completed "Restroom Redoubt" - Day 14 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/14
π₯Ά That involved more ad hoc fiddling that I prefer, but hey, it's done.
I've completed "Claw Contraption" - Day 13 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/13
Ugh! This was the first day where I really wandered off on the wrong track. I kept thinking about doing it the right way, but was continually seduced by a flashier, but wrong, approach.
Blasting "Operation: Mindcrime" while reviewing code: good idea or the worst idea?
11.12.2024 16:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've completed "Red-Nosed Reports" - Day 2 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/2
In UIUA (uiua.org), which was interesting, but probably not something I need to do again.
π¨π¨Job Alert!π¨π¨
We are looking for a senior scientist to help my team at Global Fishing Watch drive impact.
This is an opportunity to build relationships that apply our technology to help make change. Please share!

I've completed "Mull It Over" - Day 3 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/3
The portion of advent of code where you still think you've learned all the lessons from the previous years and that this year will be easy.
Thatβs cool that you can host it on github pages! I wouldnβt have thought of that.
