The most astonishing part of Elon's and The Boring Company's idiocy in this is that they actually built not just a single-lane, but a *single-track* car tunnel rofl

Earth breaks yearly heat record and lurches past dangerous warming threshold Earth recorded its hottest year ever in 2024, with such a big jump that the planet temporarily passed a major climate threshold.

I wonder how far past 1.5C we'll be before we finally stop pretending that we can still stop at 1.5C.

I refuse to shut up about this: NYC started charging $9 to bring a car into our most transit-rich zone, the haters & trolls predicted doom, but traffic evaporated instantly and hereโ€™s Times Square tonite (even after the holiday tourists have left). For a better future, build transit & price driving!

one of the reasons I love congestion pricing so much is that it provides a simple and straightforward fix to traffic, which is bad for productivity, health, and climate.

it literally fixed traffic overnight. itโ€™s the closest thing we have to a modern miracle.

It's worth noting that the US is also one of those countries who emitted the most to date (if not the worst offender) and will probably emit more due to the load growth. The US should have more responsibility in not only reducing its own emissions but also helping developing countries decarbonize.

This is probably the most important story of year in the energy transition. ~600 gigawatts of new solar added to world grids today. That will produce ~1,000 terawatt-hours of clean electricity, or ~25% of all US electricity use or 2/3 of India's. In one year! Simply massive & it's accelerating. ๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿ’ก

This is huge: China's refined oil consumption peaked in 2023, says the research arm of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). Will decline 1.3% in 2024, despite ~4.8% GDP growth projected this year. Why? EVs! (Mostly) www.reuters.com/world/china/... ๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿš—

China is set to add a record 260 gigawatts of solar this year.

For perspective, thatโ€™s more than the total added globally in 2022, which was a record year.

Itโ€™s nearly 6x more than the US, the second-biggest market, is set to add this year

US sets tariffs for solar panels from Southeast Asian nations U.S. trade officials announced on Friday a new round of tariffs on solar panel imports from four Southeast Asian nations after American manufacturers complained that companies there are flooding the market with unfairly cheap goods.

This is madness. If other countries want to sell us solar on the cheap so we can expedite adoption of clean energy, let them. Either climate change is a crisis, or it isn't.

Car tyres shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment โ€“ย urgent action is needed Tiny flakes of plastic, generated by the wear and tear of normal driving, eventually accumulate in the soil, in rivers and lakes, and even in our food.

Every year, billions of vehicles worldwide shed an estimated 6 million tonnes of tire fragments. These tiny flakes of plastic, generated by normal driving, account for 28% of microplastics entering the environment globally.

This is important, but one thing that is also key to remember is that policy fights about cycling often happen in data-unready institutions. Transport advocates are held to unrealistic data standards, while the status quo defenders are absolved of the slightest responsibility of self-reflection.
