โI almost never sit down with an idea. ... And I like that itโs a puzzle. Instead of going to a therapist, I can sit in my studio and start picking things apart, like, โThis painting is about this, and this is about this.โ โฆ I never know what that next show is going to be until it builds itself.โ

โCertainly, Iโm having these formal shifts in the paintings relative to what seems like the condition of the world. Sometimes the world collapses and you go, โWell, I want to give everybody a treat.โ And sometimes the world collapses and you need a painting that feels like that collapse.โ

Guardians 9, Rangers 8: With Detroit losing nearly an hour earlier the Guardians had already clinched the AL Central. But winning this game like they did โ with a four-run tenth inning rally capped off by a walkoff three-run homer from Brayan Rocchio โ bolstered a theory of mine: that the Guardians are possessed of more Devil Magic that any team since the La Russa-era Cardinals. They had a massive comeback here. They clinched their playoff spot on Saturday night on a walkoff hit-by-pitch. They beat Detroit with 57 dinks-and-doinks last week, with the rally being kicked off by their own dude getting hit in the damn face with a hundred mile-per-hour heater. And, of course, they came back and won the AL Central from 15.5 games down despite ending the season with a negative run differential. There is nothing natural about any of this. And they don't friggin' care, man. That's the most unsettling part. The Cleveland Guardians can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. I don't actually think that means they're World Series favorites or anything, but it does mean that we toy with them at our peril. If they eventually get knocked out of the playoffs it's probably because they just get beat, but it's also possible it will be because they accidentally ran their car over the entire opposing team and were deemed to have forfeited. And now they get the Tigers again after playing them six times in the last two weeks, winning five of those contests in no small part because Detroit seemed utterly spooked and intimidated. It's almost cruel.
Draft of the recap for the Guardians game in tomorrow's newsletter.

Kimmelโs refusal to capitulate stands out because so many other well-situated peopleโthose with the resources, platform, and power to stand up to the president, including, initially, the leaders of ABCโhave surrendered, withdrawn, or become Trump sycophants themselves. One by one, American leaders supposedly committed to principles of free speech, due process, democracy, and equality have abandoned those ideals when menaced by the Trump administration. These cascading acts of cowardice from the people best positioned to resist Trumpโs authoritarian power grabs have made Trump seem exponentially more powerful than he actually is, sapping strength from others who might have discovered the courage to stand up. Defending democracy requires a collective refusal to acquiesce to lawless behavior from many different sectors of society. All of these powerful people trying to save their own skin have effectively multiplied Trumpโs attacks on constitutional government, by enhancing a false sense of inevitability and invincibility.
Kimmelโs defiant return highlights one of the most disturbing dynamics of Trump II, that so many people in positions of leadership are chickenshit frauds who would rather fold in advance than put up anything resembling a fight www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
