Constitutivism attempts to work within these constraints and, I think, comes out with a compelling vision of metaethics.

I’m compelled to think of it like a like an engineering problem anyway. Morality/Justice is the Work we want a moral system to do, but it needs energy put into the system, so we need human motivation to drive that. Yet there are other constraints on what a moral system is.

Re: Brute fact of moral sense, this is part of the ad hoc issue. A lot of the attraction of Self-Constitution is that it paints a picture of moral force that marries rational endorsement with the brute psychology of motivation. Street’s article does a good job of talking about this.

Korsgaard has an essay on Self-constitution in Plato and Kant that highlights a reading of their thought that more closely aligns with a vision for ethics that is self-supporting.

Largely, it’s Nussbaum’s reading of virtue ethics - and the same is true for a lot of people who read Kant as a rules-absolutist.

It’s almost certainly the case that I’m working with a higher standard for grounding - my dissertation work was on a defense of Korsgaard’s metaethics and an attempt to re-expand them to political philosophy

Unfortunately, the bacteria have not yet written a how-to guide.

(My secret is that I think Korsgaard’s constitutivism is the closest we’ve gotten to THE GROUNDING, and that it does ultimately lead to something that approximates a capabilities-like approach that is internally motivated and justified.)

That’s not to say it’s ultimately wrong, but I struggle with their formulations, which ask you to be externally motivated to it. I always felt like I was reading policy as opposed to philosophy when reading their defenses.

Does Krause add more foundational backing? I’m still not sure the capabilities approach as written can stand on its own - I was attracted to Nussbaum’s and Sen’s work a while back, but I think it leans too ad hoc in its grounding.

I can only hope that when history is written about this time period, there will be a section about the American Vichy, and it will be headed with a big picture of @gavinnewsom.bsky.social’s face
