We urge the government to create a new opt-out sickness insurance for the self-employed, funded by workers and engagers, alongside other vital reforms.
Much more to come in the upcoming report from @thefabians.bsky.social !
Brilliant to see my upcoming report on sick pay for the self employed covered in the Mirror today.
Self-employed workers currently stand to lose 81 per cent of their income if they fall sick, leaving many in precarious situations.

This is my penultimate publication before moving on from the Fabians, so itβs amazing to see such strong engagement with the report.
Now onto my final publication on sick pay for the self-employedβ¦
5. Mandate all 600 large food businesses to commit to the food waste reduction roadmap, rather than relying on voluntary commitments.
You can view the full report and its recommendations here:

3. Abolish VAT for building refurbishments and repairs to level the playing field with new builds.
4. Ensure the National Wealth Fund invests in infrastructure for large scale critical mineral recycling, stimulating further private sector investment.
We suggest that the government should:
1. Introduce a target for England to reduce raw material use to under 8 tonnes per person by 2050.
2. Introduce a cap on repair prices to create a true βright to repairβ for consumers.
The report explores practical steps to cut waste and scale up the circular economy in England.
With the UKβs material footprint now at its highest level since 2008βand nearly three times what the UN deems sustainableβthe forthcoming circular economy strategy is a vital chance to turn the tide.
Delighted to see that my recent report βRepair, Reuse, Recycleβ was the second most read think tank report in August, according to @smartthinking.bsky.social βs monthly newsletter!

The report sets out several policies that would help turn the tide and should be included in the upcoming circular economy strategy.
The government could:
π― Introduce a target for England to reduce raw material use to under eight tonnes per person by 2050
But several factors have held back progression to a more circular economy, including a lack of political prioritisation by successive governments, a lack of clear targets, and a lack of financial incentives π΅

Delighted to launch this @thefabians.bsky.social report today on how England can reduce waste and make the circular economy work at scale.Β
We are currently going in the wrong direction on resource use, but there are several practical steps the government can take to turn this around.

π¨NEW REPORTπ¨
In 2022, the UKβs material footprint hit 20.1 tonnes per capital, the highest since 2008, and itβs still rising.
How do we turn this around?
In βRepair, Reuse, Recycleβ @eloisesacares.bsky.social sets it out. π§΅
Building 1.5m new homes is a stretching target
It will require starts to nearly double, compared to previous parliament
But the Gov will be judged on delivery so further reform is needed
That is why @thefabians.bsky.social have established a Housing Centre

Our report βWhatever the Weatherβ recommends the government introduce a maximum indoor working temperature of 30C
Originally recommended by @tuc.org.uk, it would incentivise employers to keep workplaces cool while avoiding health impacts to workers
Spain and Germany already have a maximum temperature law πͺπΈπ©πͺ
The UK must adapt to our changing climate and protect workers from the health impacts of more frequent and severe heatwaves
You can read the full report below β¬οΈ

We also recommend clear statutory responsibilities on employers if working temperatures reach 24C, including:
π Temporary relaxation of dress codes
π§ Provision of water
π‘ More regular breaks
π Provision of suncream and protective equipment for outdoor workers

Itβs also efficient to spend now - ABI research finds that every Β£1 increase in maintenance spending almost Β£7 is saved in capital spending.

Our 2023 report Whatever the Weather recommended an immediate strategy for investing in the development and maintenance of flood defences.
This is essential to ensure we are prepared for existing and future climate change, and to protect our homes, infrastructure, and health
The spending review commits to Β£4.2 billion to build and maintain defences, which is welcome.
But research shows that more than Β£1.5 billion a year is likely needed to increase flood resilience in England π§΅
Great to hear the Chancellor say the warm homes plan will be expanded.
@thefabians.bsky.social are planning research on how the gov can learn from previous plans on home upgrades & use data to ensure upgrades reach those that need it most.
