We were in the desert
Everybody saw that visage scowl
A carving with commanding air
Bade us look and despair.
But there was nothing there,
Except ruin and still air!

Dont let YPS fool you

The "activist" in question worked for them, went on a mass blocking of trans people, and YPS only stepped in when it became clear how bad this looked

I would encourage fellow trans scots to stay well clear of Your Party Scotland. Our trust must be earned

Oh damn, I didn’t know they’d been bought. I just heard about their latest game yesterday and had been considering it, so thanks for letting me know. Easy enough to pass on that.

A still from the seventh episode of Star Trek: Picard (“Nepenthe”). Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart, left) stands facing Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes, center) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis, right) in Riker & Troi’s home.

The actual dialogue in this scene was intensely boring and I no longer recall it. Instead, I have altered the captions so that Picard is telling the others, “Did you know Cleopatra lived closer the Battle of Wolf 359 than the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza?” (Going by Star Trek canon, this is actually true.)

I just think it’s funny because Picard is a big archaeology nerd; and also because 99% of the time, the writers forget he’s supposed to be traumatized by Wolf 359, so here he is literally trivializing it.

I made this a few years back, but never had a proper excuse to post it, so I hope this counts.

I’m trying to decide if “LLMs can’t write tests” is because:
a) open source devs generally don’t write enough tests to train on;
b) writing non-trivial tests is just the Halting Problem wearing a fake mustache; or
c) most of them would fail, exposing the con immediately.

Oh wait. I think I decided.

Shoutout to my first trans roommate (back in ’96 or so) who always dressed up like Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot and did a nonstop “cross-dressing Bugs Bunny hits on you like you’re Elmer Fudd” bit when cis men were around, so they’d look like humorless dicks if they said anything transphobic.

I dunno, it could argued either way; and there’s a case to be made that Kermit and Piggy should be the ones to kiss at the end, which complicates the whole thing.

Anyway, that’s my little ramble; and I think Sam the Eagle should probably be Cypher, since he’s the stick in the mud.

You’d expect the Matrix to be full of Muppets, to imply “low-res people”; or “you *think* this is a normal Muppet movie, but just you wait”. Plus: you’d get Miss Piggy in bullet time.

But I like the idea that Muppets are the rebels; they’re the ones who fully embrace their authentic selves.

Using this to suggest my pet idea for The Muppet Matrix, which switches between standard and inverse rules depending on whether the scene takes place in the Matrix or the real world.

Neo would be the different one: in the Matrix, he doesn’t “belong”; in the real world, being The One sets him apart.

I think the original iPhone had enough legit novelty to justify itself, but the App Store opened the floodgates to so much that followed, so I’d go with 2008 (coincidentally, the same year Bitcoin appeared, another major scam vector).

You might have trouble buying stuff online. Some payment processors need to geolocate your IP in order to calculate VAT, and if they see you’re using a VPN, they’ll reject the card on those grounds, rather than declare it fraud.

Genuinely so fucking angry to read this.

A not-small part of me hates how correct this is. Prescriptivism was always bad; but I like knowing and using the rules to their fullest; but AI is fascism-coded; and so on.

I love the em dash, but just like everyone uses “lead” to mean “led” and “hung” to mean “hanged”, it is I who must adapt.

We really fucked up as a society when we went all in on STEM and let these nerds think they were geniuses for dismissing the humanities.

Every great scientist and inventor of the 20th century was at minimum a hobbyist artist, poet, or musician.

These freaks can't even read a book cover to cover.

I maintain that the bit at end of the footnote — "making it in the long run harder for users to deal with dedicated or savvy harassers” — was *the* motivating factor behind ATProto. Jack is a free speech maximalist, and expressed frustration with being “forced" to implement moderation at Twitter.

Their goal is the complete elimination of “legal immigration” as a concept, including retroactively. That’s a big part of why they want to get rid of birthright citizenship.

(And as awful as Trump is, Biden jump-started this most recent wave with his “fuck asylum seekers” bullshit.)

Which is all to say that the Hollywood vision that history turns on a single decision or moment or person is usually wrong. Going back in time to kill Baby Hitler doesn’t wipe out the widespread antisemitism among Germans in the 1920s and ’30s. Most problems are too big to put a neat bow on.

I usually pick November 6, 1984 — when Walter Mondale got nuked from orbit — as the day Dems threw in the towel on any kind of progressive agenda.

But also, as much as we all love to hate on Reagan, the neoliberal urge to deregulate everything actually got its start under Jimmy Carter.
