This past semester was the most stressful of my academic career. I had 180 students and about half cheated at some point in the semester

They submit weekly reflections where the questions are opinion-based, graded only on effort, don't care about grammar

SO MANY students submitted ChatGPT essays

The software exists, and is out there. Let's say there are 500,000 y11s, and an affordable device for £200 with sponsorship from a big tech firm, that's £100 million. There may be additional costs and savings, but it's relatively small beer, in the education budget of over £100bn...

Some exams also very long and allow some notes or similar - reduces time pressure and exam technique and memorisation in favour of assessing understanding.

Over here🇩🇰 students get a lottery for which subjects are examined. The other grades are based on the work over the year(s). And there's orals for lots of/ potentially all subjects. This is at 18-20, as well as 16ish. They never have exam load of GCSEs. So look abroad for alternatives, I say!

Sounds pessimistic in £s and time, but yeah, a big ask. Maybe just ask Bill Gates - he has computers and wants to give all his money away. Or start taxing billionaires properly.

Unsurprisingly, most of what has followed has been a bit underwhelming!
