if someone wanted to make their own bluesky that didn't have a whole bunch of separate instances the way mastodon does, i don't think that's a problem. i think the problem with traditional social media sites is their origins in corporations (capitalism). we need communities that aren't about profit.

i have no particular love for decentralized technology in itself but i do believe very firmly that we should all be using less tech that is specifically controlled by corporations, the wealthy, and the interests of capital. we need more community-run sites

oh one other thing: because both bluesky and mastodon call themselves "decentralized" social media sites, there's been a lot of talk lately about what that means and why it may or may not be desirable

but i do wish people would try it for themselves before dismissing it outright. try making an account on kind dot social! that's the instance i'm on. it's a cozy, queer-friendly community. the people are nice.

i try not to get into arguments with people about this, both because arguing on social media is generally counterproductive regardless of the topic and because people who want different things from social media than i do may well have radically different experiences than me. i try to remember that

i just saw someone describe mastodon as having a huge transphobia problem and like... i'm trans. i have emotional issues specifically related to transphobic harassment. i am very sensitive to it! and i can personally attest that it is easy to use mastodon without being harassed for being trans.

are you actually just talking about the band? is that it? when you say stuff like "it's impossible to use" are you describing the experience of playing the song "colony of birchmen" in rock band 2 by noted prog metal band mastodon?

i'm on both mastodon and bluesky and i gotta be honest, the way people on bluesky talk about mastodon is so completely divorced from my own experience that it feels like they're talking about a completely different thing
