“A policy focused on shorter trips, almost certainly made by a more diverse demographic, would have a different emphasis: much less cycling on "main" roads; the creation of cycle-friendly side streets; the development of safe routes to school; the provision of more secure cycle storage facilities, particularly in low-income areas; and an emphasis on junctions — according to Transport for London research in 2023, 84 per cent of cycle casualties occur at junctions.”

Give short-distance cyclists priority over speedy commuters
The majority find a bicycle useful for shorter rides: the trip to school or to visit friends locally, or journeys where public transport may be complex
Great to see my old friend @johnjohnstewart.bsky.social making the case for Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) to support local active travel journeys in yesterday’s Times www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

Ending the acceptance of road death in London
Vision Zero promises to end deaths and serious injuries on the road by 2041 – TfL knows we need to step up the action and is working on Vision Zero Action Plan 2.
I hope all Londoners will share their ideas with me for #VZAP2 to help TfL prevent road danger and keep everyone safe on our streets.

“Oh my God I can see Green Lanes from here”
It is utterly shameful that leaving roads, known to be dangerous, without making any changes is normalised.
The danger is not inevitable it’s a choice.
Thanks @carlafrancome.bsky.social for another 🧵 about my report.

We agree! 😱
Green Lanes, like too many main roads in London, remains hostile & dangerous for cycling
@carolinerussell.bsky.social's brilliant report on Vision Zero needs Mayor, TfL and councils to act, now, to avoid more families & lives ruined

🧵 by @carlafrancome.bsky.social hits nails on heads 🔨
❓Could it be that some local councils don't care about anyone other than car drivers and want to keep status quo ?
❓Do council officers drive to work ?
❓ Have councils declared #ClimateEmergency ?

I appreciate this isn’t the sort of thing a normal person says, but I did an 18-tweet thread this morning, and I left something important out 🤯😂

This is what a stretch looks like. So much space for parking. How brilliant this could be if it was a protected cycle lane.
Now I understand that this was done historically and change takes time, but I really thought something would have been done by now. It’s an … /10

“Stuck Record Blues” maybe? 😢🎵🎤 Any others?

Replace speed limits with momentum limits. Your max speed is inversely proportional to the mass of your vehicle.

Much better than £0.
But compare:
