It was

- Massive deployments of wind (and solar) (contrary to Gates' wishes)

- Huge gov't subsidies to help that

- The climate movement aggressively defending those policies against people like Gates' friend Bjorn Lomborg

From the standpoint of improving lives, using more energy is a good thing, because it’s so closely correlated with economic growth. This chart shows countries’ energy use and their income.
