starting to think we should give "strange women lying in ponds distributing swords" a chance as a basis for our system of government

"Prior to the neatly formulated questions of systematizing intelligence, there is the deep-set wonder in which all questions have their source and ground. As an expression of the subject, art would show forth that wonder in its elemental sweep."

We just got Promissio in English a couple days ago. I’m not seeing much interest in Bayer in English apart from the Lutheran Quarterly circles, which is sad. He cuts me deep.

Do you think they will ever translate this one into English?

You should read her commentary on the Tao te Ching if you get a chance. Super interesting.

I typically read all the scripture offices in morning prayer, so for me evening prayer is more about…letting go? The examen might be helpful if that is your goal as well.

What if you start small by just doing the phos hilaron, the collect of the week, some silence, and the thanksgiving? That’s short, and might help rekindle the habit.

If Moo Deng were to move to the oldest continuous European settlement in North America, she could be Hippo of Augustine.

I think too his cultural liturgies series was mostly written pre-Trump, and I wonder how he might frame things differently now. Liturgies of resistance seem to have taken on a new importance…

I think you could call it postmodern Reformed more than Neo-Calvinist. The way I read him his inspirations are more fundamentally phenomenology and Augustine, but expressed (at times) in Reformed language.

Honestly the scripture texts did it for me. John 6 then 1 Corinthians discussion.

And the prayers really can bear the weight of rereading and meditation! I feel like they really opened up BCP spirituality for me.

I am befuddled by our aversion to evangelism. If we have found life and peace, why are we so afraid to share it?!

I work in young adult ministry, and we try to do two main things: build deep community (YA don’t have it but they crave it), and serve in the church (doesn’t have to be huge, but this keeps it from becoming merely a social club)

β€œThe middle is not given to us as a mere means; it is the place of a way, a passage. Agapeic mind passes towards what is offered in the middle, not simply for some conceptual return to itself, but because the being of the other offers itself for a celebrating, affirming thought.”

My teachers and fellow students generally eschewed the truth question so much I’m not sure this would occur to them to be meaningful. They would be more interested in what LLMs are doing to people and their lives.

They need a Lonergan or someone to link them up to truth questions lol

I’m in the pragmatist world a tiny bit because of my educational studies (Dewey et al were our main theoretical substructure, and remain so in most educational circles), and in general I would say β€œno.”

I have seen some intriguing stuff about LLM use short-circuiting genuine inquiry though!
