Back in 2020, a studio negotiated with my agent to buy the option to develop my Embers of War trilogy into a TV series. “Buying the option” means they reserve the option to buy the rights to make the show, and the rights can’t be sold to anyone else during the period of the option (12-18 months). It protects them from being beaten to the punch by another studio.

They recruited a well-known director and had a kick-ass script for the first episode. Sadly, COVID and the writers’ strike delayed things, and eventually the option lapsed

But if the project had gone ahead and they’d decided to actually make the show, they would then have had to “exercise their option” and buy the rights to make it. Buying the rights costs them about ten times as much as buying the option. For an author, selling the option can be a nice little earner, especially if it’s renewed every year or 18 months. But selling the rights can bring life-changing money

Once the rights are sold, the author will probably not be consulted on the script, casting, and other aspects of making the show. Your exact level of involvement will probably be negotiated by your agent and put in the contract when they buy the option. But then you have to let your story go. Books and moving pictures are very different mediums with very different requirements. And now, the script writer and director are going to give their interpretation of the story.

A question I often get asked by writing students is, “How do I get my book made into a film?” So, here’s the basic process explaining the difference between selling the “option” on your book and selling the “rights.”
