Ah yeah, my main poorly-articulated point is that it’s okay to talk about discrimination you or others receive for being settled Irish, it’s just not racism! And everyone wants to call it racism, thus the endless arguments and people feeling like their experiences aren’t being respected.

In Ireland, settled people perceive racial differences in ways that people not from Ireland wouldn’t understand, I agree with that! And this is replicated in other countries / ethnic groups as well.

Right, in countries where others perceive racial difference, that’s what I was saying. Just agreeing that Irish people are now largely understood as white, but can still experience bigotry and, outside of the UK and Ireland, the same goes Travellers, if that makes sense.

I think we all really need to get more comfortable with the term “bigotry.” There is a lot of bigotry and discrimination that has absolutely nothing to do with perceived race / skin colour. Still extremely bad, but not racism.
