We All Have Whistles Now
A boy walked by
His whistle caught my eye
The bright yellow plastic
Popped against his deep navy jacket
He was leaving the site
Where Alex Pretti was ripped from this life
Alex had his whistle that day
A rebuke of those gone astray
Who view fellow humans as prey
Whistles pierced the air that morning
He stepped between, hands raised, protecting
But he was pulled to the ground, beaten, abused
Then killed in cold blood, though already subdued
Like Renee before him
He stood for what is Good
It cost them their lives
Loving our neighborhoods
It was our mission then
And it's still ours now
That boy must have been 5
But we all have whistles now
We All Have Whistles Now, a poem

This post is a plea from me, my friends and family, my neighbors. From Minneapolis, which has become my home.
I ask for understanding, for compassion and for ICE to leave our city.
This is not a post about politics, though I admit I'd like to make it one. I'm well aware that any such message would fall on deaf ears of many of my friends and followers on Facebook and Instagram, so | appeal to something we (at least claim to) have in common: our faith.
What happened to loving our neighbors and helping "the least of these?" And when did that only apply to certain segments of the population?
Our neighbors are scared, and for good reason. People are being abducted on the streets by masked men with no identification, families are being torn apart, and those who are supposedly upholding the law seem to revel in the chaos they are creating.
A 10th-grader was assaulted by ICE, who stole his phone and tried to sell it. Parents are forming human barricades at preschools to make sure their children are safe. Some schools are closed!
Renee Good was killed for not getting out of her car.
Was Jesus' message, "Comply or die?"
Our community is being terrorized while those with the most power in our country are lying about it.
This needs to stop. Please.

People march in downtown Minneapolis to protest ICE’s presence in our city. A Donald Trump caricature paper machete and Minnesota flag are prominent in this photo

perhaps my favorite great egret photo for #LongBeaks and #BirdOfTheDay
not a crazy capture, but i love how its white feathers pop against the darker background and green foliage in the foreground 🪶

among numerous other issues, who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to conduct this interview in the middle of an operating plant??
i get the visuals and trying to make it seem working class, but you can hear the machinery! the audio sucks!! it’s distracting!!

good on them for acknowledging the early press times, though
i’m sure readers have called in to complain about evening events not getting in the paper, and it’s important to be transparent with the community

newsrooms across the US have dealt with this, but it’s jarring to see one of the nation’s biggest pubs go through it
a 5 p.m. press time is eeeaaaarly for a daily
