The illustration depicts a scene from the Acadian Expulsion: a British soldier in a red coat, holding a musket with bayonet, advances on a group of distressed civilians in 18th-century attire. A child is pulled by the ear, a bearded man is restrained while raising an arm, a woman in a yellow-and-green striped skirt kneels in anguish, and others gesture in protest or despair amid a crowd in a grassy outdoor setting under a cloudy sky. The artwork is signed "Daley" in the bottom left.
From 1755 to 1764, over 11,000 Acadians were pushed off their land by the British and forcefully relocated elsewhere.
Over 5,000 died of disease, starvation and shipwrecks.
It was a dark time in our history.
This is the story of the Acadian Expulsion.
