Graeme has nearly completed one of the fiendish crosswords in Boatman - The First 50. His colouring-in is most attractive!

Reviewing Boatman - the first 50, Alan Connor (The Guardian's crossword editor and the brains behind many of BBC2โ€™s quiz programs) says: "This is one to savour. Boatman's puzzles are witty and ingenious. It is an extraordinary pleasure to read how his unique mind works. The first 50 is a book I never knew I needed in my life. Gift it to yourself and to the word-lovers in yours".

Boatman - the second 50 contains another 50 puzzles from The Guardian, with five bonus puzzles previously only available online and including puzzles, solutions and the ideas and stories behind them.

Reviewing Boatman - the second 50, Gyles Brandreth says: "If you want a fiendish crossword, you want the best - which means you want Boatman, because he is the best" and Brian Bilston: "Cracking crosswords - each puzzle a delightful daily workout for the brain and a welcome tonic for the soul".

AVCX โ€“ Crosswords for the (not) faint of heart.

I've had a go at a puzzle for the American market in @avcx.bsky.social . avxwords.com. Thanks to @francisheaney.bsky.social for getting it in shape. I was advised against too much depressing reality, but was allowed one:

Perhaps Trump and Musk supporting introduction of fascism (5)

Depends who you ask/what publication whether youโ€™ll get away with a semicolon I think. I have had the odd one with a ? I think, but it must not interrupt the cryptic grammar/wordplay

This was so much fun! And gentler than the average Fed! I love Fed puzzles as despite their difficulty sometimes, the surfaces are such great fun, loads of laughs! The best kind of puzzle imho - if youโ€™re yet to experience this fun, hereโ€™s a great place to start!

A zygote is the result of a sperm joining an egg.

โ€˜Zygoteโ€™ comes from the Greek word for โ€˜yoke.โ€™

A โ€˜yokeโ€™ is a wooden beam that JOINS two animals together.

The โ€˜yolkโ€™ of an egg is from the Old English word for โ€œyellow.โ€

โ€˜Yokeโ€™ and โ€˜yolkโ€™ have no relation to each other.
