Great piece. I think the Byrdsian qualities are often overplayed. The record they’d clearly been listening to a lot is that Empire album that came out of the break up of gen x.. it’s more post punk than people give it credit for.

The original Guilty Pleasures night is what kicked all this off. There was an irony to it that’s been lost over time. Now it just means things you like that you feel shouldn’t cos it’s not considered cool. I don’t think the guys that started it were taking the piss, I think they loved this stuff.
