I always figured Janice Lester was the epitome of the unreliable narrator - that Starfleet Command wasn't going to promote her due to her quite obvious psychological instability, and that the same instability led her to believe it was due to her gender.

I know we sort of live in a time in which personal morality is irrelevant in politics, but it’s worth noting that there are very credible allegations that at least two cabinet secretaries are presently engaged in affairs with coworkers; one with her right-hand man and the other with her bodyguard.
