Power Outage in Spain | NASA Earthdata NASA's Blue/Yellow Composite of nighttime lights in Spain after a power outage was captured on April 29, 2025, from the VIIRS instrument aboard the NOAA-20 satellite.

Could you share the source? I harbor a suspicion it's fake (since the blackout happened around midday and by the evening half of power was on).

Here's Andalusia at night (as per NASA).

Spain, Portugal set up task force to identify blackout cause Madrid and Lisbon will β€œcollaborate to identify… the cause, and above all to implement the necessary measures to ensure it does not happen again,” Spanish energy minister Sara Aagesen said in a statem...

I don't get it: why are #Spain and #Portugal setting up a task force to figure out what caused the #blackout.

They could just open up their twitter and find out. So many people not only know the cause, but have solutions on hand, too.

Sure. Now we have a rather large capability gap. I'd wish we were looking at it as a task to complete or a challenge to overcome, rather than an unsurmountable obstacle, fatally locking Europe to US at the time when US is at its absolute worst.

Interesting conversation, thank You. Mr. Michta has a fascinating American view on Europe, where it:
β–ͺ️Is a freerider and it is embarrasing that these rich countries arenβ€˜t taking care of their own defence, and
β–ͺ️cannot possibly take care of their own defence because USA is the only deterrent. :)

We should be treating populists preferentially in the eyes of the law just because they are popular? Quite a sad take.

Fortunately the remedies remain mostly the same, whether they genuinely were accidents or not.

Confiscate the ships, try the crews, and auction anything valuable found to cover the damages unless the crew or ship owners fork out enough cash.

Should stop the incidents eventually either way.

Saturday – frequency stability tests (see right side of the frequency graph).

As if tests weren't enough, around 1400 local time (highlighted) a large gas generator disconnected (red line).

It was replaced by hydro & pumped h. (lower blue).

Freq. dropped to 49,6. Still – no disruptions.

9:09 AM this morning all three Baltic states disconnected from the Russian IPS/UPS system.

Tests are being performed today (50% done at the moment) and tomorrow we join the Continental European grid.

Oil in 2006, gas in 2014, electricity 2025. Looks like we're free.

β–ͺ️Propaganda slipups like "liquefied natural gas from America, which is more expensive than piped gas"

(I know, Gazprom did rot brains with this nonsense over decades, but go ahead and ask yourself if piped Russian gas in 2022 was cheaper than American LNG today).

Not surprised any more.

EUROPE’s summer-winter gas calendar spread has marched deeper into backwardation as traders anticipate the region will have to pay much higher prices to refill storage in the summer of 2025 than it did in the summers of 2024 and 2023.

I don't mean to be a party pooper. Most of the stuff mr. Wilkie says are great, but his idea of "spigots opening" and 40$ oil is nonsensical. Kinda deflates the whole thing a bit.

"Learning to live with" does not sound like a solution.

The question that follows "might not be possible to get this level of certainty" is "what level of certainty we can meaningfully get to and what to do once we're there".

LitPol Link is the only connection that, if brought down, could delay the synchronization itself. Security around it was tightened recently.

There is another HVAC line on the way – 700 MW Harmony Link (same) – but it will be built in a few years, meaning, post synchronization.

Post synchronization power trade via this link will either cease, of be very limited. All of it will be rather dedicated for system operations.

2️⃣ There is one overhead HVAC (high voltage alternating current) line connecting the Baltic states to Poland and thus to European continental grid. That is:

β–ͺ️ (d.) 500 MW LitPol Link (LT-PL, operated Litgrid & Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne, PSE), built in 2015.

Also, synchronous area is an area in which the electricity grids are connected by alternating current (HVAC) connections, and not direct current ones (HVDC).

⚑ However, these interconnectors are very helpful for balancing the Baltic grid and provide low-cost power imports.

For one, Scandinavian countries belong to the Nordic Synchronous Area. That is Finland, Sweden, Norway and eastern Denmark.

Baltic countries are gearing up to become part of the European conitental grid, not the Nordic synchronous area.

β–ͺ️(a) 350 MW Estlink 1, (FI–EE, operated by Fingrid & Elering), built in 2007.
β–ͺ️ (b) 650 MW Estlink 2, (same), built in 2014.
β–ͺ️ (c) 700 MW NordBalt, (LT-SE, operated by Litgrid & Svenska kraftnΓ€t), bult in 2015.

These are not essential to synchronisation in the strictest of terms.

To help us all get a better idea what that will be all about, here are all the international power interconnections Baltics have and what role will they play.

1️⃣ There are 3 undersea HVDC (high voltage direct current) cables connecting the Baltic states to Scandinavia. These are:

There have been some cable cutting in the Baltic Sea.

These happened in context: on Feb. 7-9 Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) are about to leave Russian power system and connect to Continental European grid.

This logic is backwards. Defence spending helps avoid rapid loss of productivity and an increase in expenses in case of war (i. e. alternative costs). Insurance.

Lithuania spent 5,1% of it's GDP on mitigating energy crisis alone (7,4% in Germany). And none of these countries are at war (yet).
