It's dark days for journalism. Every bit of support counts, both when you're subscribing to websites like The Verge and supporting individual writers.

Me, I just contributed five subscriptions' worth to support the colleagues that Vox laid off.

Dan McQuade, 1983–2026 | Defector Dan McQuade, our friend and colleague, died this week at the age of 43. He is survived by his wife and young son. At the end of 2024, Dan was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. The news of his diag...

I think the key that unlocks Dan was his desire to share the things he loved with other people. Wouldn’t be the worst way to honor him if we make the effort to do that for the things we love, too. defector.com/dan-mcquade-...

hell I do this even when the story is not sensitive. A lot of folks’ ideas about how reporters work come from how a narrow slice of beats cover very public people.

I speak to a lot of people β€” bakers, cooks, farmers β€” who have never spoken to a reporter before. Sometimes about sensitive stuff. I always explain this stuff at the top of the call, and walk through how I maintain confidentiality. If you want to talk to a reporter, the good ones will do this.

I did a little experiment of one here. And uploaded my 2023 radiology reports. ChatGPT recommended waiting 3 months for another scan, with a 10-40% estimate of cancer. Not wrong, evidence-based.

My doc, who’s been practicing for 30 years, saw scans & ordered an immediate biopsy.

I had cancer.
