Filial support laws obligate financial support of aging parents. Should we remove senior discounts too?

I remember being a teen and spending my own money to travel. Not a good assumption that they're always traveling on a parents dime

A functioning tree protection ordinance is a better tool for protecting trees, I agree. But when "protected" trees are being removed for SFH redevelopment, and other lots are being built to the edges with no permeability or room for trees to be added in the future, setbacks are better than nthng

Well, that graph is also not odds-adjusted accounting for increase in units, but since it's the data you presented... Dont forget that existing housing also see improvements. (Tight g'pa clauses)

70s brought grounded outlets in new construction, 80s ban on Al wiring, 90s GFCIs. All real wins

It's not uncritical- its trying to understand why these rules exist. It's not hard to find data on how dangerous extension cords are in the US. By fire code, they should never be used continuously. If you don't have enough outlets, they get used continuously. Houses burn, people die.

Sounds like we should implement licensing and training requirements to ensure that people know the rules applicable to the area they work in.

Isn't elimination of extension cords in non-temporary service a laudable safety goal? I still don't understand the process costs you claim for implementing that rule. It's pretty straightforward. Sparky can count to six.

Where's the overhead in tracking outlet spacing? I've seen a pretty dull crew get it done with a walkthrough and a roll of masking tape.

There are plenty of changes in the NEC alone which would be painful to give up. Aluminum wiring, shared neutrals, undersized kitchen circuits, GFCIs ...

It's not though! At least no more than Queen Anne or Capitol Hill is North Seattle. Lived on N Beacon Hill for years, people around here don't call it "South Seattle".

nit: I've never understood why some people call N Beacon Hill "South Seattle". It's less than a mile from Pioneer square, and adjacent to the CD. (Parts are N of the CD even.) Dunno why I find it so irksome, but it always feels dismissive somehow.

Maybe everyone but me knew this, but I was CERTAIN that
"plankton" was a term for a clade of organismsβ€”that there was a certain branch of the evolutionary tree that you could find plankton on.

But no. Plankton is just anything alive that floats rather than locomoting.

Continuing the 49th parallel west to the Georgia strait is a brilliantly easy boundary line tho.

Pretty sure that many a western land surveyor would have applauded that decision.

Design is difficult to get right when accounting for emergency vehicles though, yeah? Track width on many American vehicles is wide enough to take advantage of side slopes and avoid overall bump height.

Or, if your home is threatened by a public tree, you get a permit and a risk assessment done like anyone else. I'm worried about the possibility of these properties now having a path to more removal in the future due to wind load on the remaining trees and the hazard they made themselves

28.06.2025 17:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The lies are out of control. There's a huge patch of topped trees up there which are over 300 feet away from the property line, 500ft+ away from any structures. Also, who limbs trees for health? And all the trees still standing are alive...

28.06.2025 17:11 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Most weren't even close enough to the property to hit the line if the fell. Coarse woody debris is great, but nobody needs to entertain this story, they're just idiotic lies someone fed to the press when they got caught off guard.

Most of the trees were young, healthy, and about 8-12 inches DBH

Or, you can start to admit that tree protection is a legitimate issue of debate and that there's a certain group of folks who aren't gonna put the issue down, at least as long as our tree protection ordinances are broken and ineffective.
