so i want to include optional 'tactical' rules for armour astir 2e. turn and grid based, the works. my question is:

is enemies getting to take turns and make attacks an important part of the 'tactical' feel worth preserving, or should combat still be a player-side exclusive exchange blows?

Again, a few of them are real - Wildsea obviously, PICO (should release imminently!), Drift (eventually)... Streets by Moonlight is a funny one because it started as something made up purely for the SRD, but has gained some kind of draft on Felix Isaacs's Patreon *after* the SRD was put out.

If you wanna check it out for yourself, go to www.wildwords-srd.com - you can view it both on the site or download a PDF version (which I think has one or two pages that to this day seem to be absent on the web version - oops).

Though the ruleset is often compared to being Forged in the Dark, the SRD itself has more in common presentation-wise with something like The Resistance Toolkit (as seen in Spire and Heart) than anything.

It doesn't have a whole lot of plain rules text you can simply copy-paste into your own project (a downside to some perhaps), and it won't Make you into a game designer, but I think it can totally ease someone into that mindset quite well.

The Told by Wild Words SRD (the rules framework based on The Wildsea) has an interesting structure to it compared to most other system reference documents: advice and examples using both real & made-up games (The Sword Spiral isn't real), and ways you can alter the systems (if you even need them).

Personally I prefer the "free edition of the rulebook" form factor over 'quickstarts', at least the kind that is essentially "a dense rules reference with pregenerated PCs and one sample scenario" - such QSs are paradoxically harder to unravel and too inflexible to be a good showing of the game IMO.
