It is a public space that was part of the Ohio & Erie Canal that ran from Lake Erie through Akron to the Ohio River. Now, Lock 4 is part of a system of public spaces along the Ohio and Erie Canalway Towpath Trail. Spanning the canal is the Akron Civic Theatre, upon which is a large, colorful mural by El Mac and AISEBORN entitled Axis Mundi, featuring the images of 2 children playing with marbles (one of the marbles is the earth).
