Microbe with bizarrely tiny genome may be evolving into a virus
With DNA focused almost entirely on replication, newly discovered organism blurs the line between cells and viruses
STORY ABOUT A BACTERIA GOING VIRAL
Genome of ๐๐ถ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ข๐ข๐ณ๐ค๐ฉ๐ข๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฎ๐ช๐ณ๐ข๐ฃ๐ช๐ญ๐ฆ is so stripped downโ just 238,000 bpโthat it blurs the line between cell and virus
Encodes just DNA replication, transcription, and translationโno metabolism, no cellular independence
Begs the question: WhAt Is CeLLuLaR LiFe?

The nitroplast: A nitrogen-fixing organelle
A bacterial endosymbiont of marine algae evolved to an organelle
Move over mitochondria, a new organelle called the nitroplast is here.
In a Science study from earlier this year, researchers report that a nitrogen-fixing organelle has been identified in a marine alga. Learn more in this #SciencePerspective:

๐ค Why doesn't an elevated BUN lead to extreme thirst? If increased serum osmolarity compels us to seek water, uremia should be a significant driver of this craving.
And yet, it isn't.
Let's examine why.

Correction Rates and Clinical Outcomes in Hospitalized Adults With Severe Hyponatremia
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the association of sodium correction rates with mortality among hospitalized adults with severe hyponatremia.
Honey, stop what you're doing, new hyponatremia research just dropped!
What's it say?
It looks like slow correction is associated with worse outcomes, like death and length of stay!
Was it just a small study?
No, it was a meta-analysis of almost 12,000 patients!

Asterixis, ie, flapping tremor, is a manifestation of uremic neuropathy, while not an indication of emergent need for dialysis per se, if it coexists with encephalopathy, it strongly suggests that uremic encephalopathy could also be present, urging the need for dialysis.
