Photo of the Day.

Israel threatened reprisals if the press filmed Gaza from above during airdrops.

This is why. A scene of destroyed & burnt out buildings in what is left of Gaza City, the pre-war home to 800,000 people.

Credit to Post photographer Heidi Levine who defied the ban & took this.

Hot tip - if you tune into a show half way through, you can slide the timeline bar thingy back to the start and still hear the whole show. 🀘🏼

Yeah really odd. You'd think that if they have consent, any other sub projects within it, or add-ons that need consent wouldn't be significant enough to warrant a fast track. Interesting.

The quiet campaign: Inside the freedom movement’s bid for council influence Voices for Freedom and like-minded groups are campaigning for council seats, changing their rhetoric from the pandemic to potholes.

Once again, a number of Voices for Freedom affiliated candidates are running for local government, this time they are hiding their more conspiratorial views and focusing on bland populist issues like rates and road cones

Yeah, glimmers of hope there. In the one project I know about the panel was surprisingly diverse & seems quite conscientious. Will be interesting to see if it makes a difference to the outcomes.

Admittedly, if you're a dodgy multi national wanting to do something contentious & you've got $250k to spend on a consent & want to avoid spending years in the environment court, the fast track process will work for you. But that's actually not most developers.

So it turns out that the 'fast-track' to getting projects consented isn't so fast after all.

This is backed up by a planner I know who's been working flat out on a fast track application for months & reckons it would have been consented by now under the usual RMA process.

β€œIdeological Sludge”: How New Zealand Is Quiet Quitting Climate Action New Zealand once stood out as a world leader on climate change. In June it became the first country in the world to abandon a commitment to phase out oil, gas and coal.

A very good long piece on AoNZ & climate which details why (among other things) the oil & gas reversal is utterly batshit on so many levels including economic ones. As these decisions become more obviously irrational, the justifications are becoming equally insane.

I just heard of Joanna Macyβ€˜s passing. I hope people take some time to learn about her work and the amazing example that she set for what it means to be an activist who really really does the work of building long-term movements. We owe a lot to her input into the conversation.

Dude from Infometrics on the radio basically saying that $10 for a block of butter is good for the economy & will make us all better off in the long run.

Funny how paying farmers well is a good thing but fair pay for women apparently had no value.
