Rebecca Bligh voted to slash wages for workers, to block rental housing in wealthy neighbourhoods, and to oppose common sense tools to properly fund our schools.

We need a progressive mayor on the ballot to deliver the change Vancouver needs. And we’ll get one. More soon.

Bligh has a decent amount of support from the province and feds (more than Sim or Allam at this point), which could help.

But her 6 years being a supporter of Ken Sim, and getting elected under both the NPA and ABC banners, means it’ll be difficult to get support from local left-wing parties.

My motion to restore democracy and transparency at the Vancouver School Board is an attempt to address this.

This motion tries to address the following problems that I, alongside unions, believe are an obstacle to good governance:

‘Fear and anxiety’: What our police FOI requests uncovered about Vancouver’s stranger assaults scare Internal emails obtained through Freedom of Information requests shed light on the Vancouver Police Department's media strategy related to stranger assaults ahead of the city's 2022 election.

VPD was aware of the intense public interest – and also of the “fear and anxiety” news of stranger assaults was causing in 2022. VPD issued at least 52 releases mentioning stranger assaults, but provided no updated data about the frequency of these crimes. www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/ar...

I am so proud to bring forward 2 important motions informed by community leaders. First, a motion to establish a school food committee, we are inching closer to a universal school food program and #VSB is a key partner!

I worry that the culture of this school board is to limit voices both of trustees and members of the public. You’ll note this isn’t the first time I’ve said this.

I was elected by people in this city and I will stop at nothing to make their voices, and my voice heard.

I have reached out to past trustees, former superintendent, and I see no precident for this.👇🏾

Today is the board budget meeting and I am unable to attend in person. I have spent the last five hours debating discussing and arguing with the board chair about whether or not I can attend this meeting virtually, despite past practice where others are allowed without special permission or vote.👇🏾

Guess what… the Chair of the VSB is blocking my virtual participation on the #VSB budget meeting!

I believe that it is my job is to listen to student and staff needs, to establish our values through budget priorities.
