i let my sfwa membership lapse because i didn't get much out of it besides feeling like i'd earned a gold star. how's everybody's experience with hwa? my local chapter (chicago) looks pretty active from a quick glance, and i've heard less incidental drama? (though it's a smaller org so)

right? what are the chances anyone immersed or even reasonably well-versed in any artform will honestly find that their favorite things exactly coincide with the most popular stuff with the most name recognition?

it was so dreadfully funny to live through and i must live with the certainty that asimov guy thought he was behaving perfectly reasonably

and to be a bit less generous, uh, if your favorite bands are the beatles and the rolling stones, i will have similar opinions of your taste, and if that makes me a snob so be it.

i will say, nobody's ever, say, interrupted my reading slot at a con to try to evangelize me about, i don't know, alfred bester. something about those three is a pumpkin spice latte for the soul for your basic white nerd my dad's age

i do understand a certain defensiveness upon having the holy trinity of competent midcentury hacks thrust upon you *again*, the way people overreact to yellowjackets and bumblebees because they've had a bad time with wasps, but even (most) heinlein/asimov/clarke dorks are harmless

ok i was going to sensibly leave it at that because i have shared all my correct opinions before but:
foundational works are important for scholars and artists AND
canon is an ocean not a glacier AND
anyone evoking specifically asimov, heinlein, and/or clarke *but just those three* is a poseur

but, they are definitely all... some guy. it's an irritating phenomenon that can feel pretty alienating, but comes from the same sort of category as people who suggest brandon sanderson on every fantasy book rec thread in the world or protest that rom coms for teenagers are the only real literature

i mean, today's round of same old discourse did (i think?) get kicked off by some guy declaring everybody had to read assimov, heinlein, and clark, and if you walk the genre world occupying certain demographics, you *will* be accosted with a strange urgency by dudes with this specific opinion

my old gaming group's having our tentatively annual discord reunion thing and fuck, we used to do this every week, twice a week, six hours at a time, all fucking day sometimes. there's a little cluster of us that does 2 hours of d&d of a saturday slightly more often than not and THAT sends me to bed
