"that he knows the magic adepts suggests he read the relatively obscure Glinda of Oz," I said to myself in the shadow of my redwall map and dragon posters. "BUT he's conflating glinda with the witch of the north, absolute rookie mistake," I went on, flipping with disinterest past the tiger bdsm bit
12.08.2025 00:20 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0my parents gave me wicked when I was 10 or 11, since I liked oz. what it explains about me is I spent the whole time indignant about how this guy didn't seem to have the slightest grasp on his source material
12.08.2025 00:16 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0you know I don't think I've used the word poseur since 2004 but I stand by the choice
12.08.2025 00:06 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0π¨SPECIAL ISSUE alert!π¨
SINNERS, SAINTS, AND HAINTS will open from August 20th to August 31st, for *reprints only!* Guest editors: @edenroyce.bsky.social and Shakeema Smalls. The movie Sinners elevated a genre Black creators have anchored for decades, and we want to show those stories some love!
i let my sfwa membership lapse because i didn't get much out of it besides feeling like i'd earned a gold star. how's everybody's experience with hwa? my local chapter (chicago) looks pretty active from a quick glance, and i've heard less incidental drama? (though it's a smaller org so)
11.08.2025 19:55 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0right? what are the chances anyone immersed or even reasonably well-versed in any artform will honestly find that their favorite things exactly coincide with the most popular stuff with the most name recognition?
11.08.2025 17:53 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0it was so dreadfully funny to live through and i must live with the certainty that asimov guy thought he was behaving perfectly reasonably
11.08.2025 17:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0and to be a bit less generous, uh, if your favorite bands are the beatles and the rolling stones, i will have similar opinions of your taste, and if that makes me a snob so be it.
11.08.2025 17:43 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0(the reading slot thing did really happen because of course it did)
11.08.2025 17:42 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0i will say, nobody's ever, say, interrupted my reading slot at a con to try to evangelize me about, i don't know, alfred bester. something about those three is a pumpkin spice latte for the soul for your basic white nerd my dad's age
11.08.2025 17:24 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0i do understand a certain defensiveness upon having the holy trinity of competent midcentury hacks thrust upon you *again*, the way people overreact to yellowjackets and bumblebees because they've had a bad time with wasps, but even (most) heinlein/asimov/clarke dorks are harmless
11.08.2025 17:22 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0ok i was going to sensibly leave it at that because i have shared all my correct opinions before but:
foundational works are important for scholars and artists AND
canon is an ocean not a glacier AND
anyone evoking specifically asimov, heinlein, and/or clarke *but just those three* is a poseur
but, they are definitely all... some guy. it's an irritating phenomenon that can feel pretty alienating, but comes from the same sort of category as people who suggest brandon sanderson on every fantasy book rec thread in the world or protest that rom coms for teenagers are the only real literature
11.08.2025 17:08 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0i mean, today's round of same old discourse did (i think?) get kicked off by some guy declaring everybody had to read assimov, heinlein, and clark, and if you walk the genre world occupying certain demographics, you *will* be accosted with a strange urgency by dudes with this specific opinion
11.08.2025 17:08 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0are the classics crusty or the discourse? yes
11.08.2025 16:45 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0crusty sff classics discourse time comes earlier every year, I see
11.08.2025 15:15 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1til autocorrect turns dagon to davon. yeah, you know, the deep one, davon
11.08.2025 14:48 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0last day of my summer. have learned trying to make it a perfect day leads to inevitable frustration. there's always something. today is satan's personal sauna, for example. so i have pretty good ice cream and an omnibus of my favorite manga from when i was 16 and i will simply be kicking it
11.08.2025 14:07 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0today's chapter in computers getting way worse at things that used to be reliable, i've had several story rejections go to spam in the last couple months. keeping authorial stuff straight has been like the one aspect of my life i'm pretty much always on top of and i want to bite someone
11.08.2025 12:04 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0in these pages, reader, is the tattered manuscript that was given to me by a man who received it in a dream from a traveler from another world who was the private secretary of the emperor of dark jupiter who instructed him to copy his father's biography of the guy the story happened to
11.08.2025 02:53 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0tank girl, with honorable mentions to mystery men and the life aquatic with steve zissou. apparently I am mainly into earnest messes
11.08.2025 02:34 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 4 π 0a moth that hurls itself into the flame achieves divinity as it winks out. a moth that flies into my frying pan to cook itself has other shit going on
10.08.2025 20:21 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0a squash vine that has wrapped its tendrils around the wind catcher on bronze wind chimes
new goal is to capture in fiction whatever this zucchini's thing is with this wind chime
10.08.2025 16:34 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0it seems almost certainly technologically unfeasible, but a "what the fuck was that noise" app would be great
10.08.2025 14:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0the merlin app could use a dataset for common false positives. no that was still a robin, they do that. no, squirrel. no, the truck over there made a really weird noise. no, squirrel again
10.08.2025 14:27 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0and yes i know there're infinitely more interesting options than d&d, i have stacks of weird indie stuff on paper and pdf, half of us have kids and all of us have jobs and it's easy to play online. like meeting at an applebees because everyone can get there and you gotta be up in the morning
10.08.2025 00:01 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0my old gaming group's having our tentatively annual discord reunion thing and fuck, we used to do this every week, twice a week, six hours at a time, all fucking day sometimes. there's a little cluster of us that does 2 hours of d&d of a saturday slightly more often than not and THAT sends me to bed
09.08.2025 22:58 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1oh, the monty and rose dynasty has a fanatical local following and very close monitoring. everybody has a name, their nesting area is heavily protected (but not from hawks), and there's an army of volunteers
