Having grown up in his constituency, I know that they will be lapping up his more hard right than Reform line.

Everything is horrible, and politics is nothing but a cauldron of despair, but even within this Robert Jenrick sticks out for his unrelenting vileness.

Either way, the battle for the right wing gutter is going to be dirty and dangerous. Their vision of Britain - nasty, racist, isolationist - is not a positive, or sustainable, one.

It is clear what his choice is. It may win him the leadership. It may even eventually lead to him one day becoming PM (via a post electoral alliance with Reform and a subsequent merger).

Jenrick realises that the Tory voters who have shifted to Reform are not going to come back if all they can offer is Reform Lite. Tories have a choice - move towards the centre ground and re-establish the one nation Tory tradition. Or move further right and go head to head with Reform.
