- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week

Government shutdowns offer a rare opportunity to un-submerge the submerged state. Something Democrats could/should be doing is every day of shutdown, pick some agency and focus on it for the day. Highlight what it does and what we're losing each day their staff are furloughed.

Earlier I read a lament that Republicans have no legislative agenda — which is true, but shouldn’t be misread to mean they have no *partisan* agenda.

They want impunity for themselves, and unfettered oligarchy for the economy. They wreck government from the inside to further those goals.

I think this is where the "we're doing this for healthcare" messaging fails. Maybe a better one would be, "the dude's not following the law so we can't trust him," or "every other admin ensured MIL got paid during shutdowns, but these guys are too busy making social media content."

Putting this is into better context, the services were in a post-Cold War freefall, looking to reinvigorate the officer corps. They recognized, rightfully, if you don’t actively facilitate diversity, you ignore a significant portion of your best and brightest. Diversity is strength.
