For whatever reason, I have felt mostly serene during these past ten destabilizing months in a way that may eventually prove to have been a form of plugging my ears. Still, I can't help but notice that the way I feel doesn't map onto what's being done in the federal government, and vice versa—and in the meantime, the ability to stay calm and thoughtful has been a major boon. I can only be helpful if I'm calm. Rage and horror drive me inward to brood; seeing what is enraging and horrifying without letting it devour me is what allows me to serve my neighbors. Feel the feelings, certainly, if only because I don't know any other way to meet them. But let them be feelings if you can, let horror be horror without convincing you to go through life as a horrified person. There's a meaningful difference there, and if the destruction of the White House is going to be so symbolic anyway, let it symbolize your defenses rather than your despair. The president is petty and stupid and mean. There's no need to meet the pig in a puddle of shit, and little use in doing so. At some point, you can't be horrified by every little fucking thing, or at least I can't. There's work to be done, and horror gets in the way. As I'm sure we all remember from Trump's first administration, this is a president who excels at doing horrifying little things. Big things, too, like deploying his goons to American cities, slaughtering people in fishing boats, letting millions of beneficiaries of USAID die—but where he truly excels, again, is in being petty and stupid and mean. He was raised by movies just as much as we were, and part of the deranging effect he has on us is that most of us were raised in turn by entertainment starring him. It's easy for us to feel like extras in the Trump Show. Still, if he's trying to convert his lifelong stardom into a boffo cinematic existence with his grand ballroom and such, we owe it to ourselves and each other to live life where it counts.
