Five Al Jazeera journalists killed in Israeli strike near Al-Shifa hospital
The broadcaster condemns the "blatant attack on press freedom", while the IDF alleges one of the journalists was part of Hamas.
Five Al Jazeera journalists have been killed in an Israeli strike near Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital. Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa were in a tent for journalists at the hospital's main gate when it was struck.

It was precisely Watergate that set off a multi-decade effort on the right to protect Republicans from ever again facing real accountability. The experience of facing consequences for their actions was deeply traumatic for them.

How Loud is the Distortion from Your Power Amplifier?
We took Stereophile's THD+N plots for 7 top-rated amplifiers and replotted the data to show the loudness of the distortion and noise at the listening position.
A mildly snarky but I believe genuinely interesting and useful Application Note from Benchmark, calling for a re-thinking of how THD+N plots are presented:

a scan of text from the 1974 Sinclair Scientific Calculator manual, reading:
"Actually the calculation has used only the first 3 digits of 1250000-namely, 125. The strings of O's are confusing, irrelevant and dangerous (since omitting one will throw out the whole calculation)."
Fixed Point Considered Harmful
---
Oh, and another little quirk of this Sinclair Scientific was that it always used scientific notation, so its manual went so far as to shame fixed-point as "confusing, irrelevant and dangerous"!

Easy-peasy: to enter those first two numbers you want to put on the stack before an operation, you hit "C" so there's a guaranteed zero in the x register, type your first number, hit "+" to add that number to zero and mark it to get pushed on the stack, type your second number... and you're off!

Also: I didn't understand how you'd work an RPN calculator without an enter key. I had to look at the manual to figure it out.

At the time (1974), it was pitched as, and was, an alternative to using a sliderule... and sliderule users were accustomed to approximate answers and sanity-checking results.
So what are a few incorrect answers between friends?
Of course some users apparently had fun probing the edge-cases.

An image (likely a rendering rather than an actual photo) of the Sinclair Scientific calculator from 1974. The image shows a calculator with a display at the top, "sinclair Scientific" and some reminders of handy mathematical constants written on an otherwise blank space below the display, then an array of blue and gray keys below.
Image source: the article at http://righto.com/sinclair
This is fun!

An affordable (at the time, compared with the HP-35) RPN scientific calculator squeezed into an impossibly small amount of ROM through impressive coding chops; if it sometimes didn't actually give the right answer, well, see above: it was affordable!

Attacks on Muslims flood mainstream after Mamdani win
Openly racist rhetoric has become normalized at the highest levels of American politics.
We should all be disgusted by the flood of anti-Muslim remarks spewed in the aftermath of Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the NYC mayoral primary — some blatant, others latent.
Shame on the members of Congress who have engaged in such bigotry and anyone who doesn’t challenge it.

I see that! With the flag as a visual focus the way an enormous crucifix might be, and the way the presence of that flag breaks up the image of the always a little dystopian looking high galleries, the cathedral-y architecture falls into place in a different way.

A large Progress Pride Flag hangs from the railings of one of the high observation balconies at either end of The Oculus, the World Trade Center / World Financial Center adjacent transit hub in downtown Manhattan. The themed lighting design has illuminated the space's vaulted white ribs in colors from that flag; they've done a particularly good job of evoking the light blue from one of the trans chevrons.
New York remains a good place to be.
Seen while passing through The Oculus: a large Progress Pride Flag and some nicely-done themed lighting design.
Official and commercial New York aren't going along with the creepy hatreds the current US regime is obsessed with.
Happy Pride, everyone!
