Back cover of new paperback edition of Health Communism by Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie Vierkant, published by Verso. Text reads: A fiery tour de force by the hosts of the hit podcast Death Panel, a chronicle of life and death under capitalism and an argument for a new politics of solidarity aimed at severing the ties between capital and health "If you have ever gone to work sick because you need the job to treat the sickness, you know the basic argument of Health Communism to be true: health under capitalism is an impossibility." LUX MAGAZINE "Health Communism is itself a blueprint... for turning illness into a weapon." BAFFLER "A new way to find the universal in the particular, which is the kind of thinking tool we are in desperate need of at the moment." NEW YORK MAGAZINE "Surveying a century of sickness under an increasingly privatized system ... Adler-Bolton and Vierkant argue that we have to demand much more than Medicare for All in order to fix health care." NEW REPUBLIC
First page of new paperback edition of Health Communism by Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie Vierkant. Praise for Health Communism โHealth Communism is a remarkable book that connects the best abolitionist analysis with the strongest social reproduction diagnosis. The authors are at once ahead of their time and right on time. The profound practicality of their vision shows that where life is precious, life is precious." Ruth Wilson Gilmore, author of Abolition Geography โIn Health Communism, [Adler-Bolton and Vierkant] show how members of the 'unproductive surplus class are cast as burdens even as health capitalism sets up entire cottage industries (e.g, for-profit nursing homes, prisons) to extract value from this very population." Charlie Markbreiter, Bookforum "This book changed the way I think about health, power, state capacity, extraction, social welfare, and resistance. It is an immensely useful tool for wrestling with the most urgent questions facing our movements in these terrifying times. Readable and flled with concise histories and clear examples to illustrate nuanced analysis, it will no doubt become required reading among those struggling against the death cult that is racial capitalism.โ Dean Spade, author of Mutual Aid "Here is deep wisdom to arm a struggle towards forms of human embodiment as yet undreamed of, inspiration for a million insurgencies of communist health." Sophie Lewis, author of Abolish the Family
Why is it so hard to imagine a world where care is free, universal & unconditional? Because the current system teaches us that care must be earned, health is a private matter, and dependence is failure. Health Communism traces the roots of that lie and how people have fought it.
19.07.2025 19:18 โ ๐ 104 ๐ 32 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Whenever marginalised people use nonviolent forms of protest to make the case for rights and basic levels of dignity, they are framed as angry, unreasonable, scary, etc. to discredit and distract. This method seems to convince liberals every time, no matter how aware they are of previous cases.

"Believing that autistic people deserve the right to a good life would require a lot of people to interrogate the way that they see the world, to interrogate their ideas of normality... and a lot of people don't want to do those things" - Author Jodie Hare interviewed by Prof @sugi.bsky.social

14.04.2025 19:25 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Labour seems set on imposing what I've called neoliberalism's privatisation of eugenic responsibility: instead of enforcing mass authoritarian eugenics, the world is made increasingly unlivable; welfare necessary for life is cut; ensuing deaths are then framed as caused by the individual's choices.

So when Starmer wants to stay within his arbitrary fiscal rules, who does he decide to take money from? The very rich? No, from people with disabilities who depend on benefits for the bare minimum of a decent life.

Basic, unsexy sh*t thatโs been lost but would make a massive difference for us as patients:
- Day centres
- Volunteer work without DWP pressure
- Community rehabilitation teams
- Having the same careco for more than a year
- good supported accommodation
No matter how many times Iโve been through it, I am always flawed by griefโs ability to spread its roots across your life in the aftermath
