I agree that road users should be visible through the mandated use of lights and reflectors

But the non-evidence based endorsement of hi viz is erroneous and distracts attention from where efforts would be more fruitful

Hi viz on boats might be backed by evidence. Their value for vulnerable road users is not proved.

In the dark we use lights they don’t rely on being hit by a light source for visibility

That’s one of the reasons lights are mandated. In UK & IE red rear reflectors and amber pedal reflectors are mandated. There’s good evidence to support pedal reflectors due to their movement

DPP finally confirmed they have issued no such dictat requiring @garda.ie to insist on original SD cards or recording equipment

Because a driver staring at a cellphone isn't going to see me any more whether I'm wearing orange or black.

Hi viz doesn’t work

It’s an unnecessary distraction of a debate

An attentive driver will see a cyclist or a pedestrian if they’re driving to test standards

Hopefully @pidgeondublin.bsky.social @janetphorner.bsky.social @feljin.ie can express the need for minimum standards to be just that - a minimum

Too many schemes are flawed

I've given up reporting all but the most serious and blatant incidents.

I went to one station to report an assault and the garda at the desk refused to take my statement. He was visibly pissed off that I was bothering him.

Likewise I have stopped - a waste of breath and time and energy…

As we all know, enforcement, or more correctly, the lack of it, is a major issue on our roads.

So frustrating to see the heel-dragging and in some cases deliberate push-back from the gardai on roads policing.

Also, as a tangential point; this representative for bus drivers didn't once mention the need for enforcement around the continued invasion of bus-lanes by private cars. Why is this relevant? Bcoz bus-lanes are usually also bike-lanes in Dublin, & private cars in them forces ppl on bikes...

Why do we keep wasting significant investments on short sighted below par infrastructure?

Poor infrastructure doesn’t get used whereas top class builds do

We’re building up a stack of shoddy examples and we seem incapable or unwilling to learn

It only stops with presumed liability for motorists. On its current path it will never stop as motorists are looking to blame & make excuses for their own terrible driving & we'll see Judges making judgements against VRU's for not wearing hi-viz.

Not perfect but perhaps RSA could get drivers to sign their pledge!!

Terenure and Pearse Street represent a good chunk of Dublin Metropolitan Region and routinely refuse to investigate Traffic Watch reports with ever increasingly sophisticated barriers and hostility - leaving Dublin’s Roads lawless @garda.ie
