You're onto something with your alternative! I'm guessing schools run with it because it fills a slot in curriculum, maybe under Wellbeing & is ready made by the RSA. So until the RSA or someone else hands them an alternative on it will go. @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social @irishdocsenv.bsky.social

Despite Kellyβs words, incidents of this type should not be expected or normalised
The fact our Justice system does not deter assailants from such violence should make our legislators and judiciary question how effective they are

I agree that road users should be visible through the mandated use of lights and reflectors
But the non-evidence based endorsement of hi viz is erroneous and distracts attention from where efforts would be more fruitful

Hi viz on boats might be backed by evidence. Their value for vulnerable road users is not proved.
20.02.2026 16:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
In the dark we use lights they donβt rely on being hit by a light source for visibility
Thatβs one of the reasons lights are mandated. In UK & IE red rear reflectors and amber pedal reflectors are mandated. Thereβs good evidence to support pedal reflectors due to their movement

I went to one station to report an assault and the garda at the desk refused to take my statement. He was visibly pissed off that I was bothering him.

As we all know, enforcement, or more correctly, the lack of it, is a major issue on our roads.
So frustrating to see the heel-dragging and in some cases deliberate push-back from the gardai on roads policing.

Also, as a tangential point; this representative for bus drivers didn't once mention the need for enforcement around the continued invasion of bus-lanes by private cars. Why is this relevant? Bcoz bus-lanes are usually also bike-lanes in Dublin, & private cars in them forces ppl on bikes...

Why do we keep wasting significant investments on short sighted below par infrastructure?
Poor infrastructure doesnβt get used whereas top class builds do
Weβre building up a stack of shoddy examples and we seem incapable or unwilling to learn

It only stops with presumed liability for motorists. On its current path it will never stop as motorists are looking to blame & make excuses for their own terrible driving & we'll see Judges making judgements against VRU's for not wearing hi-viz.
