That's my story in the outer portion of the right front leg of this book!

The grasshoppers are here, jumping like popcorn in a pan with no lid. I cleaned out the birdhouses and left the fronts open. The full moon will dry them out.

Replaced this book because I lost it but then I found it. Feels fitting that I continue buying copies until I have a good collection.

Last night I opened the windows at dusk & surrounded myself with poetry books, like one of those circles of candles u see in the movies. I read & wrote til it was too dark to see. I summoned three poems.

Flash Fiction: Drum Circle by Laura Remington The more I listened, the more the drumming made sense. Glued together by a few steady beats, pleasing, ever-shifting patterns formed in the chaos.

I let my dad tell me the story again of the black clock & how my grandpa worked as a chauffeur for a man in the Shaker colony & the man liked him so much, was so impressed by my grandpa, that he gave him this clock. Have I told u the story of this clock, my dad asks at least once a year. No, I say.

It's so interesting how personal that natural word count is! Like the length of a sigh. Mine is around 1200. Beyond that, I feel like I'm babbling.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Honestly do not know how you do it! I have to give myself at least chapter word limits or else I just freeze up.

How do people write without word limits? Like I'm in a vast desert or a moonscape with no borders. When is it over? Where does it end? How do I choose which words when all words are possible??

The orange sun rising over a still lake, the reflection of wispy clouds on the water and a tree to one side hanging over the water in the foreground.

Just before I snapped this, a pack of coyotes to my left started howling. Maybe at the sun peeking over the trees? There were 13 cormorants waiting for us in a tree around the corner. When the sun finally rose, it lit up the mist orange like the water was on fire.

My Side of the Mountain - Orion Magazine On Jean Craighead Georgeโ€™s most famous book, Waldenโ€™s legacy, and the dream of togetherness

The most astonishing part of My Side of the Mountain to me as a child was not the winter outdoors, the grinding or picking or surviving harsh conditions. It was how clearly his family saw him in the end & respected his choice. I loved this reminder of that.

The unique thrill of falling into a book you found in a thrift store, thatโ€™s not famous or old or taught. Just a book by some guy who loves something you love and cared enough to write about it. A book just for you.

Doritos are non-essential. Doritos are pleasure based. Doritos are above and beyond. Welfare to keep you barely alive, not to make you happy.
