Major cities as well will be affected. Greater Boston, for instance, has about 75K international students, ~1.5% of pop. They are on average wealthier & spend more discretionary income than U.S. citizen students. That's a big subsidiary economic hit right there.

It's important to note here that we're not just talking about faculty & university staff. 100s of U.S. colleges are in towns or small cities where they form the major industry & lifeblood of the community. Loss of students -> loss of rent $, restaurant $, bars, bookstores, gaming stores...

Three formative events for me as a young woman in the 1990s were all centered on Americans absolutely trashing different women for different circumstances: Anita Hill, Monica Lewinsky, and Chelsea Clinton.

The other thing is that there is a racial component to this — nerdy boys of color were often not welcome into these spaces either and the radio shows and tv shows that advanced these discourses were regularly hella racist

It's time for academics to seriously consider collectively organizing a boycott of institutions that cave to the Trump Administration and surrender their academic freedom while imperiling everyone else's.
