I had a dream I saw a dump truck with thousands of rocks painted as various pride flags. They were being gathered and destroyed. At first it made me very sad, then it made me think of all the people who had painted those rocks and still had that impulse in their hearts.

It’s remarkable how hard it is for folks to just . . . interact with the kid in front of them in ways that are mutually enjoyable. Some kids wanna rough house, some want to tell stories, some want to line stuff up, it’s all good.

A suburban caveman house

A suburban caveman house

Quit freaking out. Remember that in 10,000 B.C., when America had ZERO international trade, a family could afford a house like this on a single income.

I ain’t saying China is fundamentally unknowable. That would be dumb. I’m saying I don’t have the expertise to know China, and I haven’t as of this moment found a China expert who I would trust to tell me accurately and without bias what life is like in China.

I don’t pretend to know what life is like for the average person in China. I’m certain that as an American I have been subjected to a lifetime of anti-China propaganda though. So I just don’t try to compare things with China because what’s the use of comparing something to an unknown.

I inherited a nice couch from my grandparents a decade ago. Its cushions are worn out, so I’m getting new ones made. It’s distressing that doing this will cost the same as a new couch. Like I know why, economies of scale yada yada. But still. Cheaper to get a new thing than fix an old one.

The New Atheists wanted to make the strong case that even when it was good and normal, religion was bad. Only attacking the fucked up weirdos would not have lead to a satisfying victory for them.

Beehold the U.S. Native Bees Hiding in Plain Sight This Spring Scientists estimate there are about 4,000 species of native bees in the U.S.β€”and they’re both cooler and ecologically more important than honeybees

Good morning! Please come on a bee adventure with me, I promise you won't regret it. 🐝 πŸ§ͺ www.scientificamerican.com/article/ther...

Here are some ground-nesting very small bees that lived with me for about a month last year. I never got a solid ID.

I have never understood the desire to fake-connect occult practices with some ancient culture we can know very little about. Want to reject the Christianity of your recent ancestors: cool, congrats, you get to make up something *new* and you should admit it’s new.

I have questions about the mechanics of using a plastic straw to smoke fentanyl. Like I guess I can imagine ways that it would work, but it seems extremely convoluted.

No one stooped so low as to offer us Heineken in the UK, but it was pretty funny that West Coast US IPAs were very popular when we visited. β€œNo thanks, I didn’t travel all this way to drink a beer that was made in my home town of San Diego.”

Very cool work, though looks like this should be understood as a potential recycling technique rather than as a way to mitigate PFAS contaminated sites.

Yeah . . . I think the US from ~1980 to present is going to be remembered as the regime with the most effective propaganda machine of all time. Many Americans are convinced that social democracy either wouldn’t work in the US or would result in our bleakest imaginings of Soviet-style rationing.

Shingles vaccine linked to 20 per cent drop in dementia The shingles vaccine could be an effective intervention for dementia, with a large "natural experiment" in Wales finding a substantial drop in dementia risk for those who received the vaccine.
