Tolkien was compelling for me personally as a kid because I was getting out in the woods a lot & what I was seeing in nature was weirdly reflected in the stuff he wrote. He cared about describing nature in a way that a lot of others didn’t, I think.

They built a mosque and a Muslim school near where I lived in Houston. The lady at the liquor store was not required to wear a hijab and I could still buy pork ribs from the barbecue place down the block. Guys like Brandon Gill are the reason Texas is a punchline for so much of the country.
