I got another ND on my NIH grant. While it’s hard to be too frustrated with the current state of things, this one was super frustrating as scored last time and thought the idea was much stronger and addressed the critiques well from the last round.

This happened to 3 of my 5 grants: assigned, de-assigned, study section canceled, study section rescheduled, grants de-assigned. One should get reviewed and I bet other will be de-assigned again. No chaos here.

Ridiculous. Just causing chaos for chaos sake. Sorry Jason.

DOGE is cutting funding for a badly-needed new VA medical center in Indianapolis.

Denying healthcare to our veterans isn’t efficiency. It’s cruel.

I’ve demanded that DOGE immediately reverse this dangerous decision.

Ok. Yeah they will probably put a new date up once they poll members. It takes a bit.

Like cancelled or working on a new date? I have one at a member conflict SEP through NIDDK that is in a similar boat. Date was taken down. And no info up on it anymore.

I have 4 R01s getting reviewed this cycle. The two that have been moved already to April. One other that was supposed to be reviewed yesterday and today also just got moved to April. And the 4th had its date removed so am sure that one is being updated.

One study section that I have a grant at has rescheduled for April and I just saw that study section posted in the register (MCNP).

Well the study section that was supposed to meet yesterday and today for one of my grants got an updated date of 04/22 on commons. I still don’t see it or any new ones in the federal register but not sure how long those take to post.

The 2nd of 5 study sections that I have grants being reviewed at got dreaded * - “Denotes this meeting did not take place as scheduled” by it. Federal register is supposedly opened up, but still the last study section posted was on 1/21, so will be 15-35 days at least for rescheduling, I bet.

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila Monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

I reached out to the POs for the grants to see if they can move them to a “Parent” R01 mechanism as there is no difference in how the specific grants are reviewed. I have not given up yet but am emotionally and scientifically drained. 6/6

The ability to identify new targets and new ways to treat disease is severely impacted when funding mechanisms that broaden the individuals and types of research being performed is curtailed. Not only is science obstructed, but every local economy where the research is performed is impacted. 5/6

Getting funded is not always about the excellence of the research. It takes individuals who do not have a certain scientific pedigree, are from underrepresented backgrounds, or who communicate their science differently, longer to obtain R01 funding. This is well-documented. 4/6
