Computational De Novo Design of Group II Introns Yields Highly Active Ribozymes
Group II Introns (G2Is) are large self-splicing ribozymes with promising biotechnological applications. This study utilized RNA inverse folding to design three novel G2Is. The designed intron Arq.I2,...
Have you ever wanted to design large and complex ribozymes from scratch? I know I have!
We used RNA inverse folding to design synthetic Group II Introns (G2Is) from the bottom up, resulting in highly active #ribozymes that splice in E. coli without proteins!

Great talk by @emiliebrasset.bsky.social at #TECSHA on the regulation of piRNA production in germline vs somatic compartments of Drosophila ovary. Sophisticated mechanisms have evolved to control different sets of TEs, to the benefit (I think) of both host and TEs.

DGCR8 haploinsufficiency leads to primate-specific RNA dysregulation and pluripotency defects
Abstract. The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS) is a human disorder where the majority of clinical manifestations originate during embryonic development. 2
Our latest paper is out in NAR! 🥳
In collaboration with @saramaciasrna.bsky.social, we show DGCR8 haploinsufficiency disrupts pluripotency in hESC by affecting primate-specific miRNAs and TEs. Our findings highlight a co-evolved miRNA-TE network in primates.

Drosophila follicle showing retrotransposons (pink & yellow) expressed in somatic cells infecting the oocyte
1/ Transposable elements are often called "jumping genes" because they mobilize within genomes. 🧬
But did you know they can also jump 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 cells? 🤯
Our new study reveals how retrotransposons invade the germline directly from somatic cells.
