There were a surprising number of former trotskyists in the early 00s neocon scene (which I know had a fair amount of crossover with the New Atheist scene)

I think, per my very vague recollections, the tacit implication was that atheists before them were unwilling to be confrontational, or challenge religion, or argue the case for atheism etc. I don't agree with that view, but I think that's what New Atheists saw other atheists in comparison.

I am very firmly of the opinion that a new, highly active, skeptic movement desperately needs to emerge again (without the issues of racism, sexism and transphobia that sadly characterised a good chunk of the previous one).

One thing @ifbookspod.bsky.social has persuaded me of is to be anti-general-advice. At a high level you can say true things like "try and be friendly and helpful so more people will want to be your friend".
