Early morning NSW Hunter earthquake felt nearly 500km away in Canberra A magnitude-4.6 earthquake shakes parts of the Hunter region with impacts felt as far away as Tamworth and Canberra.

This morning, a M4.6 (prelim.) earthquake near Singleton was felt across eastern NSW.
Our latest analysis here at @earthquakes-au.bsky.social now has this as M4.9 with a depth of <4 km - comparable to the depths of earthquakes at the nearby Mt Arthur Coal Mine in 2024. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-04...

That’s a wrap for 2025 at the @seismosocam.bsky.social annual meeting. As always I am grateful for the opportunity to meet my online friends in person, and to showcase our observatory and the tools that we developed to monitor earthquakes. See you all next year in Pasadena!

A spate of earthquakes just rattled the Asia Pacific. Should we worry? The deadly Myanmar earthquake last week was the biggest among a number of smaller quakes that rocked the region.

In the last ~2 weeks the Asia Pacific region experienced several significant earthquakes.
In addition, Japan released casualty and economic loss scenarios in the event of a local M8.0+ earthquake.

The whole #MyanmarEarthquake rupture in one interferogram! This is three consecutive wide swath frames of ALOS-2 data, provided by JAXA through agreement with NASA. The line-of-sight (LOS) is ~perpendicular to fault strike, so most of what you see is vertical motion at bends and steps of the fault.

A M7.7 followed ~11 mins later by a M6.4 aftershock - still a strong earthquake and likely damaging in itself - in Myanmar/ Burma about 40 mins ago. It took ~12 minutes for the associated waveforms to arrive at our recorders in the @earthquakes-au.bsky.social network in southeast Australia.

What does an earthquake look like beneath your feet? This visualization shows seismic waves in action.

We’re studying how such visuals improve public communication after major earthquakes. We'd love your input! Please take our short survey & share: ww3.unipark.de/uc/SIOseismi...

Magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes offshore fault near the Cayman Islands - Temblor.net A relatively shallow, left-lateral strike-slip event struck on a fault zone that bounds the Caribbean plate.

A M7.6 earthquake struck SW of George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands. This offshore quake occurred on a strike-slip fault. In this short news report, Temblor scientists consider which faults have been brought closer to failure.
