New paper: NOAA research flights are important for improving hurricane forecasts. Wind data from NOAA flights improved forecasts of a storm’s path by up to 24% on average, found Melissa Piper @melissapiper.bsky.social & Ryan Torn.

SSMIS is also used by forecasters to peer underneath the clouds of hurricanes to assess their location, cloud structure, and intensity. Losing SSMIS is another blow that will further degrade our ability to monitor and forecast hurricanes, just in time for the coming peak of hurricane season.

“The erosion of American scientific capacity isn’t theoretical, it’s underway,” Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, wrote Monday in his newsletter. In an email later in the day, he called the executive order “a general tool for dismissing all inconvenient science.”
