The "one big trick" that every aspiring authoritarian in the 20th century has learned is that you don't have to get people to agree with everything you say, you just have to get them to mistrust anything that anyone other than you says. Widespread cynicism is corrosive to democracy.

When you've had your fill of maps, give Little Itlay a try. Bencotto is our favorite restaurant there.

SSMIS is also used by forecasters to peer underneath the clouds of hurricanes to assess their location, cloud structure, and intensity. Losing SSMIS is another blow that will further degrade our ability to monitor and forecast hurricanes, just in time for the coming peak of hurricane season.

Nice article in @nytimes.com by @sominisengupta.bsky.social about the "gold standard" science executive order.

As you can tell from my quote, the EO is double speak that's designed to give the administration the ability to dismiss science they don't like.

Warm air finally spilling over the Eastern Continental Divide this afternoon. The normally colder spots in Garrett and Allegany counties are in the low 50s, while north central Maryland is in the mid 30s. It's not too often you see Frostburg warmer than Baltimore.

What’s heartbreaking is watching all of the misinformation from people who don’t understand the purpose of FEMA and what role states have in disaster recovery.
