Greg Bovino was asked how he felt about his demotion today. "Well, obviously, I'm not happy", he replied.
Someone in the crowd shouted back, "So which one are you?"

This was always my feeling. If you cap Black you should cap White by the same logic, which nobody wants to do, and rightly.

Opinion | Trump’s Neediness Is Transforming America

I don't often read an op-ed and think, "This is for posterity," but this essay from @ejdionne.bsky.social does an excellent job of chronicling how Trump's unlimited lawlessness has led us here. It will be a valuable record in trying to understand the mess we got ourselves into back in 2026.

As far as I know, Tom Suozzi here still does not have a primary challenger in his district (NY-3 on Long Island).

The filing deadline is April 6 for the primary on June 23, and if there's a remotely progressive town council member or PTA president in that district, this is the time to make a move.

A federal judge, in a published order, so very much on the record:

β€œICE has likely violated more court orders in January 2026 than some federal agencies have violated in their entire existence.”

If you have concerns about the production of your book manuscript or how a publisher is engaging with AI, *please* ask your dealbreaker questions well before you are holding a contract in hand. You will lose months if not years if you wait until after peer review (and likely won’t get what you want)

Repatriations of Unauthorized Migrants in the United States, by Type and Presidential Administration, FY 1993-2024*

I know it's your practice, @nytopinion.nytimes.com, but "conservative columnists are allowed to lie as much as they want" is still dishonest and unethical. Repatriations of unauthorized migrants were far higher under Biden than in Trump's first term.

The Bovino demotion is seriously welcome news, but please keep up your calls to your Senators.

DO NOT let any of them point at his demotion as a sign of reform/justification to go ahead w/ supporting DHS.

A sentence I'd never think I'd read from a fellow American in 2026.

Long live the people.

Sunday (Monday) Respite More Reading as Resistance

New post up at Inverse Square. I aim for a Sunday respite post, centered on reading that can help push back on today's evils.

Hard to do this week, wh. is why my post is a day late.

I found beauty...and something else, in a poem by Rupert Brooke. You too might find it worth your time.

Back when it was the USSR trying to conquer Afghanistan, I edited a book by a journalist who had lived w with the Afghans. They shot down Soviet helicopters with WW2 rifles. The Vietnamese licked the US against similar odds. History does not favor anyone who invades a homeland, including Minnesota.

This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

you should not share a post that's a screenshot without a link to a news item. you should not share a post that's a video or picture without some kind of sourcing. we're in a new bad era and these are now basic practices.

So let’s set the Gestapo aside. Instead I’ll use this thread to compare Trump’s thugs to other secret police and terror squads from different times and places. It’s tyranny, no matter where it comes from. 1/10🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
