its not just brienne! a lot of the nights watch sections are some truly heroic stuff too. his point is that the sacrifices and the genuine heroism of people aren't enough to end those evils. but the heroism and sacrifice of those people builds a new world out of the ashes of the old one.

Martin's best characters are the ones who though from time to time they might stumble and fall while trying to do the right thing *always* get back up and do it anyway. Brienne's "no chance and no choice" sums up his thoughts on doing the right thing in those worlds.

While I, personally, view him as *the* major figure in advaita vedanta, at least as the one who brought a great degree of philosophical and theological sophistication to it, there are plenty of hindu's out there who would disagree with me about his primacy in hindu theology/philosophy.

Some scholars push back against the idea that Adi Shankara was *the* major figure in Advaitism or that he was a "crypto buddhist" and point out that he seems to be more of a background figure in opposition to his contemporaries within advaita vedanta (which doesn't include all hindus).

there's some contention to the degree to which Advaita Vedanta was influenced by Buddhist/Jain scholars in the reformation of hindu doctrine. some hindu's feel as if its over stated.
