One of the people who disagreed with my framing offered the phrasing “being an agent of white supremacy” to describe what I was referring to as Black people “being racist.” I may start using that instead.

to be fair to everybody, there can be fine distinctions between “being a racist,” “doing something racist,” and “racism”

I’m not referring to prejudice, though, at least not directly, though encouraging prejudice is often a function of what I meant. I’m referring to cases where non-white people oppress other non-white people from limited, often tokenist positions of relative power within white supremacy.

Friends of mine had explicitly made the argument that in addition to colorist and featurist, Black people can be racist to one another from limited positions within white supremacy, but I don’t think I was sure that dynamic was best described as “racism” until the fallout from “slavery was a choice”

That also makes sense to me! I always just thought of the power dynamic as being somewhat separable from the individuals participating in it, such that a non-white person could still hurt another via white supremacy and qualify. I should refresh myself, I wonder if both could be contextually valid

To clarify: I know of zero cases where the majority *of Black people* in a polity voted for racism.

I can think of cases in this country where the simple majority of a majority-white polity voted for racism, and last election almost a majority of the whole country’s voters did it.

Yeah, a member of a social minority hating the social majority is never an example of racism. But to my understanding, one member of a social minority oppressing other members of the same minority group, or another minority group, can be.
