21.08.2025 08:55 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It really depends on the state and sometimes even the school or teacher... the USA at a federal level has so little control on what happens in schools (mostly just free/reduced meals, language learning, & disability conditional grants)

OMG, pistols are the worst. In US military generally only officers, medics, and spec ops train with them. Pistols are both less useful and more dangerous than rifles.
But in Iraq the locals were scared shitless of pistols because that's what Saddam's police killed em with (shrugged at rifles)

Graphic showing a 9 m wide track for metros can move as many people as a 175 m road for cars.
To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars.
Even if those cars are electric.
And then thereโs all the parking.
OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc.
Choices.
Simple.

09.08.2025 04:22 โ ๐ 39 ๐ 7 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 2Dial-up Internet to be discontinued AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. This service will no longer be available in AOL plans. As a result, on September 30, 2025 this service and the associated software, the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, which are optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections, will be discontinued. This change will not affect any other benefits in your AOL plan, which you can access any time on your AOL plan dashboard. To manage or cancel your account, visit MyAccount.
So apparently we are within the last 60 days of dial-up AOL being a thing.

I believe AI image generation is only locally accurate (thus the wrong number of fingers thing). So long names are inevitably changed (or wrong in the middle) and there's a strangle interaction between state boundaries and labels where the more common appear (also why small states aren't labeled)

07.08.2025 22:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This is not caused primarily by "screen time".
It's been caused by the mass eradication of third places for young people in basically every city over the past three decades - and a society that's hostile to the concept of teens socialising in public spaces.

30.07.2025 13:37 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0You asked what could make a language more collaborative if we were thinking from ground zero -- giving up raw readability for the ability to support labeling and comments in multiple languages was my answer
30.07.2025 13:37 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0function and variable labels can be in any UTF language, but in most langs the stdlib & keywords are exclusively English
Learning to program requires English, especially professionally. The docs for OCaml being in French is a large factor in why they used it for teaching code to high schoolers!
I lived in Paris during COVID and went running every day during lockdown; as soon as it ended and cars were back you could actually feel the smog when running
My partner actually stopped running because it was so much harder on both lungs and dealing with traffic/commuting
I'd make sure it wasn't English Requiredยฎ๏ธ, so room for translations of labels/comments (and associated VC issues) and symbolic stdlib
Maybe also some kind of label agnosticism could enable it? But likely have to give up human readable source code.

29.07.2025 08:47 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The US is one of the only countries you can market drugs to consumers in.
Also, every new i.e. "specialty" drug is launched with marketing around how you can get your insurance to approve. Insurers don't want to pay and make hoops for pretty much every new drug
This is how they need to explain reintroducing wolves
