There seems to be a wild variation in the resistance to the ongoing genocide in Gaza in different western governments. Has anyone looked at whether this tracks with the levels of political donations to politicians in different countries by pro-genocide pressure groups?

I’m completely persuaded that the hockey assist is one of the most useful economic metaphors for the correct role of government in economics - don’t try to directly meddle, but invest all your $ into creating the environment for success from schools to UBI to healthcare. Business can do the rest.

Eg2 you want to help businesses in your city. Don’t give them tax breaks! Instead invest that money in public transit, congestion charge schemes, public parks and civic events and museums etc. Make your city better! This then attracts smart, creative, young people - and that drives your economy.

Hockey assist economics:
Eg1: it’s 2008 and you need to bail out the banks. Ok - but don’t give them $500bn directly. Set up UBI and free student grants etc and distribute the $ to people that need it. Result? They’ll spend it. It’ll still end up in the banks anyway but do social good on the way.

The Hamas attack on October 7 was a horrendous crime against humanity. But the only relationship between it and the even greater crimes against humanity being perpetrated in Gaza today is that it is being used as an excuse for what certain Israeli ministers and generals have long wanted to do.

Ok (1) obviously we need to do everything possible to save lives in Gaza but also (2) this is not a standard famine - this is entirely manmade by the Israeli government. Why are Canadian tax payers providing $340 million to cover the costs of Israel’s war crimes? Time to seize some Israeli assets.

Fantastic and sobering thread. Aligns with much of my internal conclusions but much smarter and more knowledgeably! I cannot see a path for America to return to being a rights and law based democracy within my lifetime. Not because I don’t want it - I just cannot see a credible way to unwind this.
