I think we’re on the cusp of mass attempts to automate teaching, and I also think it is going to be a massive wasteful failure in ways that will make the “learning loss” of the pandemic look like a speed bump next to a mountain.

This is very important:

Many institutions like universities & corporations bending the knee to Trump aren't just otherwise independent organizations forced to comply.

Rather, Trump's actions offer their management & owners an *opportunity* to do the Trumpist things they already wanted to do.

Three days of lefties crying about Kamala and genocide. Let’s be real—if she came out strong for Palestine, y’all would still tank her chances.Same energy you gave Hillary. Until you learn politics is policy, not your fave character, you’ll keep sabotaging the progress you claim to fight for. #Pinks

This is a very good article on a terrible engineering and bureaucratic negligence. But a plane crashing into a poorly-engineered wall during an emergency landing caused by a bid strike is a pretty freak accident.

As opposed to, uh aircraft colliding with each other midair in the US...

Am I the only one who is a bit puzzled by US media's obsession with (albeit a very fatal) singular engineering mistake in South Korea?

The much larger story is that, at this point South Korea's overall transport infrastructure makes the US look like the Flintstones universe.

From a report today on @npr.org: People held at Alligator Auschwitz have no legal path out. ICE says they're held on state charges, so Federal immigration judges can't hear cases for bond or anything else. The state hasn't charged them, so state judges can't hear the case because there's no case. 1/

Purdue student detained by ICE and taken to troubled Louisiana holding facility Yeonsoo Go, 20, was detained after her immigration hearing in Manhattan and taken away by ICE agents.

Go, a college student, has a dependent visa (her mother, an Episcopal minister, is here on a religious worker visa), which doesn't expire until Dec. But when she tried to renew it early, ICE nabbed her and sent her halfway across the US to a detention center.

Column | Zuckerberg fired the fact-checkers. We tested their replacement. Our tech columnist drafted 65 community notes, Meta’s new crowdsourced system to fight falsehoods. It failed to make a dent.

Meta fired its fact-checkers, citing concerns of liberal bias, and replaced them with a version of X's "Community Notes." How's that going?

Well, my coworker @geoffreyfowler.bsky.social proposed 65 fact-checks debunking false posts... and only 3 got approved. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Like Heidi points out, Trump's policies are rapidly shrinking the immigrant population, but the observed data may understate the decline

The actual Jan-July immigrant population drop could be 2.6 million (5.1%)

This is because survey benchmarks were set before Trump’s actions kicked into high gear

-Trump couldn't do recess appointments because House Dems would force an Epstein vote if Rs returned to adjourn
-Texas Dems fled the state to deny Rs a quorum

Fleeing Texas was the only way Democrats could block Trump’s plan to rig the midterms “The Republican members have outsourced our democracy to Mar-a-Lago”

Re-gerrymandering a state to rig an election & then threatening to arrest and expel the members protesting that election rigging is pure authoritarianism

Texas Dems who fled state are fighting for very survival of American democracy www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

This 2018 article is a useful reminder that what Trump is doing to government data collection is both a real break from past US precedent, but also totally in line with what we've seen in many other authoritarian countries around the world. The US never was immune to this.

New Trump Administration Memo Tells Colleges Which DEI Efforts It Might Consider Illegal No “facilities or resources” designated based on race, the document says. No requirements that hiring committees consider underrepresented minority candidates. No “cultural competence.”

They're declaring illegal practices that are not against the law, in the (sadly, correct) calculation that many institutions will engage in anticipatory compliance. @aaup.org

This is another way of saying the only working part of Trump's economy is hype-based services and even then, AI is only "booming" because investors are lighting billions of dollars on fire hoping to be the last standing; there's no positive revenue anywhere in it. An economy of the 1% for the 1%.
