Tiny woman, big poster … Happy paperback publication day to me. Seeing The Map of Bones out into the world, it’s the end of 12 years of researching, writing, editing and living with these characters. Quite emotional, to tell you the truth..

What you want to write
What you are good at writing
And what readers want to read.

You have hit all 3. Others need help to find that intersection.

For most of us it will be driving, driving, driving.
But yours…

I’d done all that. Not one beta reader picked up the issues.
Nor did my writing group.

Don’t assume lack of success is poor craft. Sometimes it’s other things. Indie authors pay far more attention to the market. Maybe aspiring writers should too.

Disagree. My first novel didn’t get accepted. I decided to go indie. The dev editor (worked for PRH) identified 3 major flaws why it’d never get published. How else would I know this?

Agents often don’t even respond now as they’re swamped.

I fixed it, decided against re-querying & published.

Yeah but every hardbitten journalist starts somewhere. Sometimes from a place of softness and innocence. It’s the people who feel the outrage who change things. And the process toughens them up.

Don’t bail. Fast forward over the submarine parts. TBH nothing happens in them until near the end.

It’s worth it if only for the Syrian. The side characters are what make the series.
